Having owned 6 different Toyota trucks, I'll tell you they have a pretty generous reserve. You generally have 70-110 miles left once the light goes on. It's worth thinking about though, when the tank is low the fuel pump is running in a small puddle of fuel so it could heat up more than it would under a full tank. I try to refill before I'm halfway through the last quarter (per the guage). When I got my 444 the other day I was worried about how low it was, since it was hotter than a 3-balled tomcat out that day.

So you guys are getting this mileage after the light comes on? I was gonna say! My light comes on almost always right at 300 miles.

All highway with a stock truck, you should be able to get closer to 350-375 before the light goes on. If I can get 21+ mpg on the highway going 65 on 4x4 DC, you should be able to get better on a pre-runner.

Mix of highway/city and I could probably drive a little slower on highway. :)

I only drive 65-70 when it's a long drive to get a little better mileage plus not in a hurry when I do road trips. I like to take in a scenery and stop and take dirt road. Found an open space off highway and let my 13 year old daughter drive the truck. She was thrilled to drive for real for the first time.

That's rad! I let my 2 yr old sit in my lap and go up and down driveway. She loves it. I'm on highway for short stretches daily only about 8 miles round trip. I always start off a new tank thinking I'll try to get good mileage and as soon as I merge onto 95 it all goes out the window.

Time to get your 2 yr old power wheels! My daughter loved hers until she out grew it. Start her early as the bigger they get, the more they don't fit so it limits use.

As for the truck, I only try to get good mileage on long trips. Daily driving with stop and go mixed with some hwy, I get about 16-17 but I didn't get for mpgs so can't complain. Unfortunately, I didn't get my mustang for mpgs either. Now I'm looking to add a third car strictly for mpg though I'd like to drive them all and the more I have, the less I get to drive them. Darn first world problems.

I only went slowly because of the road's condition, I investigated to be sure it was legal to drive 25 mph on the interstate (called a State Patrol office and talked to the watch commander). I would not drive slowly if not necessary for safety. I90 was rough because the concrete panels had tilted due to poor low bid construction (people I know said they saw stumps being buried in the fill). The road has now been fixed, you can see the fixed areas there are 3 patches between the concrete panels where they tied them together after leveling them.
Fortunately the on ramps were all smooth so I could merge without a problem.

I usually drive faster than the speed limit watching for slow vehicles of course and I stay as far to the right as possible (more likely to get picked off if you're speeding in the left lane). I've thought of making a trip at 60mph to see if I could get 25 mpg, I see no problem with driving 60 on a 70 speed limit road in the right lanes.

My friend's dodge ram 1500 gets 24-25 mpg on the highway according to my friend. Auto trans with a dial to select the gear (that's just wrong). The cost difference between it an my Tacoma will buy a few 1000 gallons of gas and I didn't want a full size.

He gets 24 to 28 all the time.
Even stated 30 on paper for a few trips.

I'm not sure how fast he drives, I'll ask. I assume the speed limit so 60 or 70 depending. The interstate between us is 60 or 70 depending on how far north of Everett you go. I'm assuming that's highway mileage.

Hell got a friend with a 2016 ram 6.4 v8 that is getting 18.5 on average for trips.
My taco has a very hard time getting clost to that.
We can both fill and run trips and I use more fuel then him when we refill running I 95.

So... if you fill up when the light comes on, then take 21.1 gallons and subtract what you added.... you'll have the amount that's left when the light comes on.

I get 19.5 mpg every tank, fill up around 380 miles. '13 DCSB 6 speed manual, drive freeway 50%. If you want MPG buy a prius

    [shudder]

A dial. Yikes. That is wrong.

I can understand it from an interior designer's standpoint. Most people use P, R, and D exclusively. Gear shifters are kind of a PITA. One of the few things I dislike about my Taco is the auto shifter being on the floor. It's handier to have it there when it's time to 4-wheel, but every once in a while my dog will make a seating change, coming up between the fronts (Access Cab) and onto the passenger side floor. One of these days she's going to bump it into reverse while we're rolling and that will suck much. I would really rather have an auto shift lever on the steering column like an old school truck (and like my '06 Tundra had). A dial would certainly be space efficient. But, yech.

the other day I drove with the light on for at least 10 minutes, probably 15 (interstate) and put in 19 gallons almost exactly.
