I have the basic package for a 2016 taco, no tow package. I felt under the 3 piece bumper and it feels as if there is a ball mount, but the bumper covers it above. Can I install a ball there by just cutting the plastic part of the bumper above out? Or do I have to get a full hitch installed?

I am just looking to pull a utility trailer to the dump, probably tandem axle trailer.

It seems like using bumper mounts always ends up bad. You should probably invest in a decent hitch to be safe.

I'm kind of curious why you didn't get the tow package? I'm not trying to bust your chops, but I've seen a few threads along these lines (wanting to tow stuff but don't have a hitch) and it seems to me that the extra $700 makes the truck a lot more usable.

I thought the tow package was standard equipment now?

Just went to the "build a truck" part of the Toyota website and for the 2016 SR5 DCSB the tow package is included in the "SR5 appearance package (V6) with options" for an additional $2150.

For the 2017 SR5 DCSB 4x4 it is available as the "V6 tow package" for an additional $650.

You would think for the low cost ($650) Toyota would just make it standard equipment for the level of usefulness (hitch and additional coolers).

What do you mean always ends up bad? Do you have any examples or just what you read on the internet?

People have been utilizing bumper mounted towing for 40 years. I was just asking if that is what I felt under there or I was mistaken.

Bumper hitches are usually rated at 1000lbs pull and 100lbs tongue weight or less; both of those numbers are easy to exceed without realizing it. I've seen someone pull the bumper off his truck trying to recover a small boat that had taken on some water.

For $100 you can get a frame mounted class III hitch and not have to worry about it, so why would you risk a bumper mount?

Don't do it!!! The bumper is a three piece and strictly cosmetic, buy the Toyota hitch or aftermarket and attach it to the frame.

I got a Curt class 3 hitch and a wiring harness for under $200.
Couldn't get the truck I wanted with a tow pkg back in Feb. they were made, just not available within 200miles of KC. anything with it was a truck I didn't want.

Drawtite (I have the Curt) hitch is like $130 delivered. But yes, you can bumper pull 3000lbs per the manual so you could do that. Wiring is the bigger issue. I have not found anything I like.

    For wiring...
You can buy a simple 4pinfrom WalMart and get busy cutting.
Or buy an aftermarket system and just plug it in.

Does anybody know if a factory 2nd Gen trailer hitch will fit a 3rd gen? I'm only asking because my father bought a new 2016 AC SR package. Thanks in advance.
