I've put on 100's of set of brake lines due to corrosion and them blowing out. Yet to see a recall.

And instead of considering this normal or OK, you should be pissed. Saving some $$$ short term isn't worth potentially putting people at risk. That's the key word, btw. Risk. You seem to think the CPS issue poses no risk. Individuals that actually experienced the failure and that have posted about it here (that I've read) seem to see it the other way. Instead of trying to figure out ways to do virtual high fives and butt slaps with TheHammer dismissing everyone's issues, why don't you try to offer actual technical guidance in threads?

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
Mine failed at 5K. Dealer mis-diagnosed, and tore down the engine, replaced the cam gear and solenoid, and the truck died 47 miles later. Got a new truck (dealer treated me well). On the new one, I have heat shielded the area. Fingers crossed.

100 degrees plus when mine failed. I think it may be heat related, especially with the proximity of the exhaust manifold. Which is why my new one has been heat shielded. But it is nothing more than a hunch.

Well... They lowered the price of the Sport to match what I paid for the SR5. So 2 payments of $475 plus taxes, processing, etc. No out of pocket, but my payments went up $80.

So maybe you have nothing constructive to add then? I think that was the bigger point.

And I am considering swapping this myself. I personally wouldn't want to have the truck die on the interstate at high speeds and get in an accident with my kids or wife in the truck. $100 and an hour of my time is worth minimizing that risk. I shouldn't have to consider doing this though... :notsure: especially if it is a recognized issue.

I will have to figure out a way to tie down my gas cap as well now that you mention it. Sounds dangerous!!

Apart from the marking, what makes a good one? I've not worked directly in Toyota parts, but I wonder why this wouldn't be superceded to another number....

    It
While some failures *may* be heat related you *might* be making a false correlation. Mine failed in circumstances that had nothing at all to do with heat. Either on the day it failed or the temps the vehicle was exposed to prior. Of course *if* the new (marked) part solves the problem they know what the root cause was/is. It seems unlikely we'll ever know for sure. The fact that they didn't supercede the part number supports information that was provided earlier in the thread: that the specification from the mfg did not change, but there was a 'bad batch'.

Anyone taking odds on when (or if) we'll see the first failure of a marked ('good') part? Hoping never.

I have replaced many of these critters on other domestic vehicles but never a Toyota .
The proximity in which the sensor reads the reluctor wheel also comes into play . The tolerance is minimal
New cps sensors from Chrysler for instance come with shim paper . The paper is placed on the bottom of the sensor as the sensor is being bolted up . At first start up , the shim paper is wiped clean . Not sure if it is relative to this post , but I figured it may help . When we accidentally placed the sensor too far away from the sensor pick up , the vehicle would intermittently no start and no codes present .
You had to watch the CPS parameter on a good quality scanner to determine the problem

As I said, it is nothing more than a hunch. But a few $ worth of heat shielding certainly can't hurt it.

Agreed in principle. You just have to be careful. You might block direct heat, but 'trap' heat after each drive.

Depth isn't adjustable on the Toyota sensors. They just bolt flush to the block
