ARE CX vs Leer 100R caps

Howdy...Just picked up my new 2010 Tacoma ext cab TRD Off Road and am in the process of searching for a new cap. This is my 4th Taco, yet first of the "new generation". I've had a couple ARE caps in the past and have been reasonably satisfied with them (nothing great...just functional) but was considering the Leer 100R this time, so I wondered if you folks had any opinions on these two caps???? The price (~$1450) on the two seems to be within a hundred bucks or so of each other, so $$$ isn't the real concern here, I just was wondering what other people's experiences have been with truck caps on these newer Tacomas. Thanks!

I went R this time because I liked the framed window look...did frameless on my 2006. Tacoma.

I also considered ARE...I like my LEER dealer.

 

I've had both.

Prefer the ARE. Think their paint and construction is much more durable.

I have a CX with win-doors, fold down front glass, and Yakima roof roack. Suits my needs very well.

 

Doh!!!! you are correct. Difference is in the back window.
I'll add...I wanted the double locks because I thought they would be more secure. The LEER rep told me the center lock, framless rear window was more secure...so he said..

I had a 100R on my 2006 for 7 years, it looked and worked as good as it did the day I bought it, absolutely no complaints. I now have a 100XL and again, no complaints. Between 100R and 100XL, I like the frameless rear window and the sportier side windows on the XLE. Also, a 100XL is slightly higher in the front which imo makes it a better cab height. I like the looks of the ARE but it did not warrant the extra cost.

A couple suggestions.... Pop for the fold down front sliding window, much easier to clean and worth it imo. I added it after the fact on my original 100R. If you buy a LEER, log onto their site BEFORE you order one and apply for their competitive coupon. It depends on what you buy, you will save between $25 and $100.... Hey, it's free money! You MUST present this coupon the day that you order. The dealers don't mind because this is a discount from the factory and doesn't hurt them.

 

I just bought a Leer 100XQ. Fold down front slider window and remote lock. Headliner included in price. I got it at Anniversary Special pricing and dealer threw in a $100. Mfg rebate. Couldn't be happier with the fit. Had wife drive it through the car wash with me in the bed. No leaks. The paint matches perfectly.

 

I have had both, and like the ARE better,they are both excellent caps, and it comes down to personal preferences and what style you like. I would never buy one new, (too cheap) and have always had to take what ever brand was available at a good deal, and with both caps have been very lucky. This last ARE I found on a totaled Tacoma in a salvage yard locally ,it's the CX model,and has sliding windows all around,interior lights, and a fully carpeted headliner. They sold it with the clamps and seals for 350.00 ,luckily it was in Timberland Mica and we didn't have to spray it. The paint matches perfectly and the quality of it is excellent. It also looks good on the truck and has no leaks so far.

 

What are your thoughts on frameless rear window versus frame?

 

I had both and prefer the framed. The rods are more secure and less of a problem than the wires. I also like the T handles better.

 

Thanks. Yes i'm more favouring the framed, for look and also it seems more secure. When in the shop I liked how the frameless opened but overall aiming for the framed version. Thanks for the input.

 

I've had both in a LEER and I prefer the frameless. The latching and locking system is better and it looks better. On the downside, the dealer told me to be careful wth it because it was a $350 replacement. With my framed version I would strap it partially closed while hauling some 2x4s, I won't do that with the frameless one. The locks on the framed one were cheesier, they froze constantly in the winter and the protective door on the lock cylinder stuck upon. I used to take them apart every year to clean and lube them but it did very little. I even had the rubber protective covers on them.

 

I did like the feel of latch opening on the frameless, which surprised me as I thought it would be more finicky. Majority of the time I will likely keep it unlocked, although I'm tempted to get the frameless with the keyless entry.
