Pull the old one out and see if it has the grid mark.

I don't think the problem as a whole is more prevalent or different than any other auto maker as is being made to sound here, but one problem is too many as this is well proven tech and too vital for it to be failing.
This is not something that needs to have the "bugs" worked out of it, it should be and can be worry free if they just clamp down on the supplier.

I don't think there's such thing as a "good batch" but I'll take odds on it being a better batch, since there's so many parts coming from who knows where, there's always a risk of failure.
And I doubt it has anything to do with heat, as there are components under the hood such as camshaft position sensors and abs electronics not suffering the same fate. It's more likely a bad batch of diodes, resistors or some other b/s component.

    There you go, that's helpful!
    Cheers!

Depth is not adjustable. They are all made the the same soecification. Being plastic housings, maybe some had a micron difference in thickness and when exposed to prolonged "excessive" heat, it moved beyond the acceptable range that it can operate at.

If any of you are familiar with the the FR-S/BR-Z, as well as some other Subaru models, that the cam position sensor had an issue with mounting depth. You had to shim it properly to get it to read correctly, or else the car to have a prolonged crank/no start condition.

The crank sensor may not need such a precise depth measurement on this engine.. Honestly I do not know, there is no depth measurement listed anywhere. What I can say is that that engine was designed by Subaru, who may use a different manufacturer, and tolerance for sensors.

There are countless variables that are just not disclosed.

Do you know if this particular CPS is a different design/PN to others in the 2GR family? I had a 2GR-FE 3.5 in a RAV4 that was pretty much flawless - and quick!

I would bet that there were multiple suppliers for the same part built to spec. Now there is probably one supplier. Who knows, those that do will never fess up to it. The ball is in Toyotas court to deal with it.

subaru just had a recall for rusting brake lines, parents had to bring in their forester, all they did was check them, and since they were fine they just applied a rust proof coating lol.

Funny you say that. I called them back and they were saying there might be a recall on my 2013 4Runner yadda yadda. First he asked my vin number, I say I don't have it on me. He then says no I got it here:confused: ok. He then tells me I'm good my 4Runner is not affected by the so called recall. Then he starts trying to sell me warranty on it! I'm like dude f off. All this bs just to get me on the phone lol. Year so sorry 3rd geners
Anyways, while I'm posting a not so
Useful post. Do y'all think that I would be able to get my 16 4x4 dc off road labeled as a lemon? Truck is at the dealership for the second time. Took it in last Tuesday got it back Friday with them saying it was good to go. "We added 3oz of trans fluid" lol. Took it for a test run, nope still there. Took it straight back to let them know there full a crap. Took it back this Tuesday. See what they say this time. The director of fixed operations personally drove my truck with me in it and felt it to. He said that it isn't normal at all. Drove a 17 off road. It didn't have the vib. I'm gonna demand a replacement or a buyback.

Because all the 16 superfan boys turn a blind eye like Obama.

Who/why gives a shit that there are problems with the 1st MY of 3rd gen and people are posting their experience? If its such a concern, ask a moderator to investigate then go pound sand.

    None...yet!
Until there is a verified failure with the revised hashmark marked part, the problem has been identified and there is a solution.

If you have a CPS with no hash mark and are worried about it, change it out. If you have a truck made before June of 2016, check it and swap it if you have no hash mark.

My truck is a July 2016 build. I may pull the sensor to check it if I'm bored one day, but I'm not going to worry about it.

I replaced my CPS today with the updated one. The chances of a failure were very low but $100 and 30 minutes of my time is worth not having any doubts about a failure on the road especially if my wife were to ever need to borrow my truck.

Here is a supposed good one with the hash mark. It's on the right side and looks like a round circle that has a hashed grid on it. I carry this one as a spare. May just swap it out and carry the original as a spare.

It is located on the back half of the block on the passenger side. Access through the passenger wheel well.
