You have a 4cyl 5 Lug, you'd be the last person I'd expect to care about HP output of Tacomas

Personally, I'm not a fan of K&N, any filter you can hold up to light and see through is not something I want attached to my engine. Small sand and particulates can get through and that's the last thing I want in my engine scoring the cylinder walls.

Quick comment I've posted on similar threads...this happened on another forum focused on high-performance FI engines with fairly significant modifications (turbo upgrades, full exhausts, meth injection, ECU tuning, etc).

Lots of dyno testing with stock air box, various CAI kits, and drop-in filters with stock air boxes. Long story short, the stock air box performed best on engines with no or modest modifications. The CAI kits only benefited those who made mods that resulted in increased demand for air in order to maintain desired A/F ratios, and even then the increased numbers were fairly minimal.

Spend your money how you want.

No problems on the old one I ran. To each his own. K&N has done fine for me in the past and I put that vehicle through way more stuff than this one will ever see

I'm at the point of running into a restriction with a 6" outlet cone filter that's 7.5" inches long on my car. I pick up a couple MPH on the top end with the filter off

I'm not much for K&N intakes purely because they suck in more hot air than the stock intake does. They're all about looks and noise. As far as a drop in, I've run them many times and still do. You can see light through your stock paper filter, which most people run the life of the truck, still get 300K+ miles out of them. Must be doing something right.

YMMV. I've seen enough damage done to ward me off of them.

I've never come across that personally. Do you have any sources? Might be relevant to post links to help people in the market.

This is an open forum, I'm interested in real information and not marketing claims. I'm waiting for some real dyno tests from available product.

What caused the issues? The filter specifically?

Define seeing light through them. I mean I can actually make out shapes through the filter. If I can do that then there's big enough holes to allow damaging particulates through. I'm running stock air box and filter on my STi for now and when the warranty runs out I'll look to an intake from Cobb and a tune from a reputable shop, maybe even a turbo back pipe.

Someone here claimed they were going to do a pull with the stock intake, and then a pull with the new intake and post results. I'd love to see real life numbers before spending my money also. The key is to be realistic, expect very slight gains, just some cool noise.

Oiled down MAFs, ruined turbos due to excessive dust getting past. I've seen aftermarket intakes cause EGR systems to not work properly as well

Interesting, I've done the same test with multiple drop in K&N filters and have never found what you claim. That's even after 100K plus miles, multiple washes and oils. Not saying you didn't see through a filter, that's not the norm though.

I've heard about people over oiling their filters. Maybe it has to do with the area and terrain their driving on? We don't have much dust here in PA. I have friends that are certified techs that run K&Ns with no issues.

That's 100% right. Guys go nuts with oil and blame the filter.
