So, my Taco (2016) started shifting erratically and had no engine power. Did this twice and finally completely died. Had it towed to Dealership - they found nothing mechanically wrong, just cleared engine codes. Anyone else have this problem?

Only thing I've heard like that is others who have had faulty crank shaft position sensors. Some are carrying a spare so they don't get stranded.

Did they tell you what codes were set?

You can get more responses when that info is posted.

Do you need to know, or care?
Sounds like that. Were you towing at the time, was the truck under heavy load?

Op likely cause is the CPS. The engine requires it to controll certain features of the engine.

figure i'll chime in on this one as well.
im a toyota tech. there is no published documentation for us telling us that the likely issue is the crank position sensor. there are some regional reps going around and telling service managers to spread the word, however.

you could have numerous codes stored in the ECU, including misfires, timing over advanced/retarded and stalling conditions.
once the sensor cools down, it seems to work. when it heats up, it fails. this is why they couldn't duplicate the issue.

have the dealership start a TAS case (tech help from the pro's). once the tech calls into tech assistance, the'll instantly be informed to inspect the crank position sensor. there are countless threads here showing how to inspect the sensor, as there is now a revised one.
sorry you're experiencing trouble with your truck. they'll get it sorted out soon and you can enjoy it once more.

(im going to assume your truck has a late 2015 or early 2016 build date)

Murray, have you heard any rumors on the rear differential howling issues?

i have heard whispers about a noise with the front differential, but no listed fix..
i was pissed when i saw "characteristic of vehicle" written next to "vibration on highway"
i assume that just means they have not found a fix yet.
i've been monitoring the threads on the noises/leaks.. still have not found much consistency across them all though.

my truck gets the light rumble strip vibration that comes in waves right around 55mph.. i'll be fiddling with that at work one day to see if removing the front driveshaft helps isolate it.

the only big one with a "fix" is the crank sensor.

By assuming that your saying the newer built ones shouldn't have a cps issue?

other way around... newer trucks have the revised part.

i was hearing that around April was the switch.

im 100% not saying that every vehicle made before the switch is affected. it SEEMS LIKE there was a small batch of bad sensors that made their way to the assembly plants.

Front differential? Weird. Most everyone reporting the issues has had the tech diagnose the noise coming from rear differential. Which is why many dealers have replaced rear differentials. They did isolate on mine with a stethoscope but the replacement diff started howling again not even 500 miles later.

I would think a bad batch of cps that they know about would be a safety recall. If this causes an accident where someone gets seriously hurt, there will be trouble. It would be a PR nightmare. If they know it they best do the recall quickly imo.

im sure that is something the insurance companies, toyota, and NHTSA are evaluating.

think of it this way(100% made up scenario):
100,000 sensors were made in february. 500 are bad.
every single one produced are jumbled randomly. the sensors are then selected at random and sent to 3 vehicle assembly plants, and 12 parts warehouses across the country.
75,000 tacomas got produced out of that full run of 100k sensors.
    - FIND THE BAD ONES.

    does that help?

not as simple as it seems, is it?

similar to the howling that the 2nd generation trucks had? my old FJ's rear diff sounded like thunder at 15mph. the front pinion bearings went bad.

Toyota just builds the trucks, they dont make all the parts. toyota has to let the manufacturer of said parts know there is an issue, then things get sorted out down the line.

Interesting thread so far. Appreciate the info murray.

My truck was built really late for a 2016. It was shipped straight from Texas to my dealer when I got it 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Anything else you know they may have switched out?
