That is how I feel about getting an auto, then again fixing same expensive recurring problem on my 2nd gen does not seem like the best idea either.

This is one thing left to try for me, but it scares me that there is no turning back once installed.

I'd sell the truck before doing something like that. I'll do light modifications but anything that gets non-reversible I'm looking to sell. I really do love my taco but at some point losses need to be cut.

Does anyone else's shift levers get a large amount of vibration on bumpy or washboarded roads? I took the truck out on a few heavily washboarded roads the other day and when I looked down the shift knob was moving about 6 inches side to side. Trying to figure out if this is normal or a sign of something going bad.

The RC62F is a completely different animal from the RA60F the second gems and FJs had.
The issue with the RA60F was the aluminum pilot shaft sleeve. That sleeve was totally out of character for Toyota being that it was cast into the front half if the trans.
The RC62F has gone back to Toyota's traditional bolt on cast iron front bearing retainer/pilot shaft. As you can see in the picture below. Toyota did learn from their mistake.image.jpg

Taco had been perfect but now the clutch pedal creeks like a fucker. It's probably the boot rubbing on the shaft. Not sure if i should spray silicone on it or take it to the dealer

So call me crazy, but the lever isn't moving as much as described. The cabs actually moving a lot on the cab mounts. I didn't realize this till I threw an expedition rack on the back which is solid mounted to frame. Looking through the rear view threw me off at how much it seemed to be moving.

Compound that with the motor / tranny mounts slight free movement, I'm not overly concerned at the moment.

Watch this video, 'expedition overland Tacoma build' and keep and eye on the bumper around the 20 second mark. You can see the flexing.

If mine so starts the creeking I am going to do the same thing I have done on 2 FJs and about 4-5 Tacomas for friends. Disassemble it clean all the low temp grease off that they put on during assembly. Lubricate with high temp silver anti-seize and reassemble. Problem solved. If I have to do it to mine I'll post a write up on it. This is also what I use on my pilot shaft splines, throw out bearings (inner bore) and lots of other things that need thick high melting point lubricant. image.jpg

My creek is all in the cab. I just lubricate the clutch pedal master cylinder and the shaft with some all purpose grease and rotate the plastic piece a bit. I have to do it about 3 times a year.

Anybody here live in a hotter area or go on long trips? I just took a 6 hour trip through mostly 95-100 degree heat and the RPM's were hanging excessively after driving for a while.

Multiple times i would push the clutch in and it would take a good 4-5 seconds for the RPM's to even drop by 500. If I slowly released the clutch it would seem to engage fine, I just like to be a little closer to the proper RPM on my shift to avoid slipping it.

I've had minor rev hang up until this point which seemed normal, but taking 4-5 seconds to slowly drop seems a bit too much. Wondering if it was the heat? Long trip?

Well towed a 4,500lb uhaul trailer 1000 miles from Minnesota to Tennessee. I averaged 14mpg and it towed pretty awesome behind my 2016 Trd off road MT Tacoma. The gearing was pretty good. In the really flat areas 6th was more than enough and didn't struggle at all. Once it got hilly I kept it in 5th and for the really steep grades used 4th. Never really went above 3000rpm with plenty of power going about 70mph the whole trip. I'm sure if I had actually gone the 55mph suggested trailer speed I would have gotten better mpg. Lol

That's good to know. I plan on towing a uhaul that should be about a ton. Sounds like it will handle it well.

I finally found a local dealer with the 6MT gen3 in the lot and I was able to take a test drive.

I'm a bit confused at all the comments that say this is a smooth and slick shifter/transmission (for a truck.) I found it to be rather horrendous, compared even to previous 1990, 2003 and 2014 m/t Toyota pickups I've driven. Very short gearing in 1st and that's to be expected, but the ratios seemed really weird.

I found it big, cumbersome, clunky, and gutless (new truck so I didn't get over 3500 rpm.) No engine feel at all, raspy action, really not much. Closest comprison I have is the 1830 Ford E150 with 3MT.

What gives? Am I expecting too much? This was a new AC TRD OR. Is it the OR feel that's so much different, it wallowed like a beached seal far more than the DCSB TRD Sport AT I test drove immediately after.

The disappointment has me reconsidering a gen3 and maybe looking at a late model gen2 (I test drive a new 2015 6MT and didn't notice anything "bad" about the transmission, whereas with the gen3 right away I was "WTF is wrong with this?" )

That's your problem. It's meant to be gutless down low for the sake of fuel economy. You didn't even get it into the power band. Above 3500 it hauls ass. That also explains why 1st has to be so short.

Honestly, I'd prefer more displacement. I'm no 3.5 fanboy. With that said, it can be a lot of fun to drive when you come to terms with the fact that it isn't a torque monster and give it some gas.

Funny most reports say the tranny is really smooth and nice to dive. My personal report says the same thing.

So Hoob drove the truck for an unspecified amount of miles, probably under 5. Didn't rev the engine to speed.

    Says a 1990 truck shifts better than a 2016...

    image.jpg

I ain't buying that story for a second haha. (My old and new) and my Ol'yota had a new clutch in it too.

When you actually drive the truck for a distance like any other vehicle, you find the sweet spot between the shifts where everything matches rpms and gears / up shifts and down.

I laughed and regretted the one and only time i let my dad drive and he drove it like an old ford ranger giving a ton of gas while letting out the clutch. Informed him no need for that in this truck.

Hoob if you read this comment, I hope you take a longer test drive next time. Don't drive it like you stole it either otherwise youll never get what most talk about with this tranny.

Test drive was about 15km and the vehicle had 190km on it so I wasn't going to try and float the valves on it, for the sake of its eventual owner.

I can only comment on my initial impressions, and take it for what it's worth but my impression right away with the 2016 OR was that "this is crude, WTF". Never had that impression driving any previous generation Tacoma, including a brand new 2015, a used 2003, and a 1990 from new (I last drove it in 2002 with about 300K miles on it, it's currently at 440K waiting for a head gasket job that may never happen.... and shift feel is the least of the impressions it leaves if you drive it now.. )

No, it's not as bad as the truck 3 speeds of yore I learned to drive on (1978 C15, 1983 E150) but there was something sorely lacking in the driving experience of driving the 2016; instead it was clunky, raspy, and distinctly agricultural.

The clutch action was very light and its engagement seemed very nondescript, completely the opposite of what one would expect given the shift feel. Anyway, who knows, I am definitely still on the lookout to drive another one, a TRD Sport this time hopefully, to get a sample size of at least 2.

I do believe the shift knob is taken from a 1983 Cressida, since the original was chewed down to the metal by an excitable vizsla.
