The plastic part is not a lifetime part. It is designed to wear out, age, and eventually fail. In the Toyota TIS new car features section, the aluminum cap used on some models is specifically mentioned as being used for longer life. The billet piece is lifetime.

Ok, I'll toss my hat into this mess.

1st OC today..1100 miles. How bad could this be?
Got a nice oil catch pan under, took off the front skid plate (ONLY) and then loosened the drain plug.
From there, it got ugly. QUICKLY.

Oil hit the drain pan and ROCKETED right out all over the dam place. Any effort to try and fix it was met with a worse effect.
Eventually I gave up and let it be..oil was everywhere.
Once it started slowing down I was realizing I only seemingly had a 5qt catch pan. OH NO! MORE OIL YET TO COME!

So I quickly grabbed the bolt and put it back in the pan. GENTLY slid the drain pain out from under..
Then went to pick it up to pour into my huge recycle jug. From there, it went worse....
    :crapstorm:

No matter how I tried to pickup the catch pan, it began to FOLD on itself like a hot pumpkin pie uncarefully lifted out of an oven w/o a cookie sheet.
More OIL - everywhere. WTF. o_O

Thank god I have tons of kitty litter and Xylol to clean the dam floor up.

Then I started on the new oil filter thingy Ive never worked with before.
Ok, this I have to admit that while I was dreading it - I like it. It drained and came off with little to no issue at all.
I used a TRD filter and the all-metal (Lexus?) housing previously mentioned in this thread and they were a match for the plastic
so I didn't need to change a thing. Got everything all set and hand tightened then went to torque it but actually it doesn't move beyond the torque spec as it is. So with the metal housing and metal drain cap, I think there is little to worry about here. But I still torqued it as such.

Then I went to install my handy dandy ez-103N drain plug so I won't ever have to deal with this again.

OH NO! The threads at jacked on the part. It was machined wrong. Seriously.

    :itllbuffout:

I looked at fumoto (sp?) - but just don't like the washer thing vs the o-ring use of EZ Oil Drain. I've used EZ before and had no issues so..
Well fortunately Amazon carries it and I ordered it for delivery Sat. I don't want to put that dam OEM plug back in just to deal with this mess yet again.

Oh, no oil shavings at all in the filter nor the pan. Minor shiny metal dust in the oil as expected once it drained but nothing like chunks or crud.

So what did I learn about all of this? NOTHING.
However at least I can pass along that the TRD filter (With nice o-rings) is an awesome filter and I think the metal housing to replace the plastic is a good idea but the plastic one IS indeed pretty stout too.

    :proposetoast: Time for whiskey...

PS. The 2013 Ram 1500 I had with the HEMI had over 7qts and was virtually the same ordeal. OIL everywhere. And, that oil filter is located right ontop of the pass front drive shaft assembly...another big mess

You must have a Walmart drain pan, one of the $3.49 ones. I say this because so do I and I think its the shape that causes oil to shoot out of it as fast as it drains out of the oil pan. Happened to me too at my 1000 mile oil change. Doesn't help that our oil is as thin as water either.

Indeed I do. It has served me well until the virtual water like oil came out.
I need a better pan but once I get the drain valve on, I just dump it into the jug.
The filter at least isnt an issue...

OMG - well I hope someone at least got a chuckle at my expense today....

lol I did but I feel your pain since I was there too. Actually ended up all over my front skid plate. When I took it off, I put it on the ground under the truck sorta next to the passenger tire. Naturally it splashed into the skid, flowed through it and off in multiple directions. Why wouldn't it though right?

Ah hah...see this is the one thing I did foresee happening. So I thought ahead!
I will set it on the lawnmower near by.
Ok, what could possibly happen - right?

When I got up in haste (With oil everywhere, I slipped and bumped it right off the riding mower, it hit the ground rather hard and put a small dent in the side of it and a large scratch.

    SERIOUSLY?! o_O

Of course it IS a skid plate so.......

It's really not though, it just pretends to be one. Wouldn't take much to destroy it lol. Stamped sheet metal for looks, it's a sneeze guard for your front diff.

They do that because most people will bring it to the dealer for oil or trans change, plus they can charge big money for service, they don't want you working on it. Subaru has the best I've seen.Oil filter is right on top facing up, unscrew filter, excess oil drains back down no mess, very simple, Toyota could take some top engineering design from them and not being able to check trans fluid sucks too.

Actually the OEM filter isnt really bad at all to get at (minus removing the shield) and its straight down vs being on top of crap that gets all slimy....

I'm happy with where and how they did this, but removing the shield is a pain but I had to do that on other cars like my Highlander.

Nothing fancy, yet. Weathertech mats front/back + their mud guards, some reflective striping and custom carpets on the storage bin lids underneath the jump seats.
It should have one. If you are on your back and crawl head-first under the truck from directly under the middle of the front bumper, the shield is the broad, flat, black metal piece directly behind the air deflector. It's held on by four 12mm head bolts (torqued to 22 lb-ft ). If you aren't certain, give it a rap like you are knocking on a door. It should sound like the big, cheesy piece of sheet metal that it is: "clang! clang!"
    Off is easy.
Back on may introduce new words to your vocabulary while lining up the tabs at the front.
You'll see when you take it off. =)
    Good luck!

Boy am I stupid.......it is there and I agree with your assessment of a new vocabulary......I guess the filter is behind the shield......well at least I won't have to dick with it for 24k miles or 2yrs...Service can do it every 5k for service oil changes

Removing the shield is the easy part. Removing the canister and then getting it out of the new filter wrench tool is the tricky part. I have one that is still stuck. Hoping someday it decides to come out on its own.

If your wrench is getting stuck to the filter housing, you're doing something wrong if you're using the wrong wrench. I did my first oil chance a few weeks ago at the 1000 mile mark and it was smooth sailing, no issues at all.

    all tore up already
if they will do it every 5k... manual says they only have to do it at 10k intervals(even though it clearly states circumstances when should be done every 5k)

I agree. Oil and filters are very cheap for my peace of mind
