2015 DCLB 4x4, at times after the car sits for hours I will start the engine with the a/c on and there will be a loud grinding noise when the a/c compressor comes on. One time I walked in front of the truck to check it out and smelled Freon.

That "grinding noise" is the belt slipping due to the sudden massive load of the A/C Compressor. I think your other symptoms are Psychosomatic.

Since R134a is odorless and colorless............ no.

A gauge set, knowing how to read the gauges, and knowing what to do with the readings isn't something most folks can figure out via internet forums.

You either need an experienced friend with the right tools to look over your shoulder and guide you, or take it to a professional and have it fixed properly.

Since you're asking us, and not a 'friend', I'll guess the professional is in order. ;)

Is the truck still in warranty? If yes, make that call. Now.

The A/C cycles off and on all the time. No, it shouldn't be grinding. Try shutting it off then starting the truck and see if it grinds when you hit the ac switch. You could have a bad compressor or belt may be slipping.

Correct. What I smelled was the oil that is in the 134a.

I now turn the a/c off when starting the truck. It happened several times after the truck sat over night. Once it happened after the truck sat for several hours like after work.

I always want to hear the truth. I just hope that it is not normal to hear a grinding noise when starting the engine with the a/c on. I have owned many vehicles even Toyota's and have never heard of such a thing.

My old 2008 used to make noise when first engaging the AC after it sat overnight, it did it for many years.

I think the word "grinding" is throwing you guys off the mark. The noise would be the belt slipping for a second when the engine is started.

The reason it makes noise is because the a/c compressor is mounted low on the engine and the noise you are hearing is the clutch engaging it makes that noise because honestly its two pieces of metal coming together pulled by strong magnetic field.
What happens is the oil in the system settles to a low point which is the compressor unfortunately, this is a normal situation and happens a lot in newer vehicles. And 134A does have a smell it's a acrid acidic odor it just plain stinks and also the oil has a smell of its own.
If you indeed do have a leak dust will gather on the leaking refrigerant and oil mix around the a/c unit. So chill out and enjoy your ride there is not much you can do about the noise other than never shutting your truck down as long as the old a/c is chillin don't fret.....

And for the lack of cooling it's possible your clutch fan is not performing as it used to because 134 requires a higher pressure to flash over and good air flow to re condense and at idle it's not that great anymore so if it cools good goin down the road don't fret it's all a normal thing that happens with age and wear on our rides...
