I changed mine at 5800 miles and it was nasty.
We had a really high pollen spring and summer here in VA.

Oil changes are not done as part of free maintenance st 5k or 15k. This thread is about oil changes.

When I went in for my 5k service, I was surprised to find out they changed my oil. I questioned the advisor because it said, "conventional oil." However, it also said 0W-20, which only comes in full synthetic. I tried to argue the fact at a new Toyota owners meeting when I got the truck that the manual listed certain circumstances when the oil should be changed every 5k and how do they know if I did not meet them. I was told they only cover every 10k for oil changes. Will see what they do at the 10k. I am glad they did the first change at 5k!

    None...yet!
Ya'll do what you want, but I change mine myself every 5,000 miles with 0w20 Mobil 1 with the best filter I can find. (Still working on that, bought a Napa Gold today that says made in China, WTF? I thought they were Wix, maybe Wix is now made in China? It's going back. I'll stick with TRD filters for now.)

I am using the 0w20 because the new 3.5 has the VVT and the Atkinson cycle which may or may not require the lighter weight oil to function. If the 2.7L now has the VVT, I'd run the 0w20 in that too. If not, then 5w30 like I did for 200,000 miles in my 2003. If the oil starts looking skanky before 5,000 miles I'll change it at 3,000 like I did in my 2003. Cheap insurance.

I buy new and tend to run my Toyotas for lots of miles and keep them so this is what works for me. I also try to avoid the dealer service departments unless absolutely necessary. It's going in Monday for the Tranny TSB flash. Free oil changes are not worth it to me, I'd rather pay and do it myself and know what was done with what and when.

If your trading your trucks every 5 years or leasing, then nevermind. :)

I requested my oil to be changed when I took mine in at 5k, the mechanic said synthetic was used. They also did the TSB.

I was getting dead on 21 Mpg weekly back and forth to work which is a combo of City/Hwy. Last week I got 21.4 Mpg.

So, after all this back and forth, the recommended oil change interval has not been changed for 2017MY.....

The 2.7 has had VVT for quite some time. The V6 has dual VVT where the 4 has single VVT

Yep the manual states on both V6 and 4Cyl, every 10K oil change 0-20W (sooner if special circumstances which is off road driving or very short driving distances) "special circumstances not covered by Toyota Care"

How much does dealer charge for oil change if I have them do it for as part of the 5k service?

These guys are trying to sell oil, but the basis of what they're saying seems pretty sound when it comes to VVT engines. I would particularly point out at the end where they say that 10,000 mile changes are not a good idea.

I drive less than 100 miles a month. Picked up my truck 3 February and just hit 650 miles in 7 months. I'm retired and only drive to the grocery store or doctor visit. The truck is only driven once or twice a week.

I only have my truck serviced (oil and tires rotated) once a year.
