I have an 07 AC TRD Off Road SR5 4x2 and I'm about to hit my 3yr/36k and I'm looking at Toyota's Platinum extended warranties, unsure on yr/miles to potentially go with. I can afford the highest package on down, which is 8yr/125k MSRP $1,925. For those with high miles, did your extended warranty pay for itsself, or did you not get one and wish you had?

I never buy extended warranties, but if you are going to get one, get one from the manufacturer like the one you are looking at. Some people like the piece of mind of having the coverage, but I don't like spending money for something I probably will never use. JMO.

For one, Toyota Platinum extended warranties can be had for much less than you quoted. Check with Troy Dietrich of Greenfield Toyota. do a search on his name. I got a 7yr 100K mi Platinum no deductible warranty for $880. I look at it as cheap insurance. The 2nd Gen Tacoma isn't built like the 1st Gen. Worth it in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm not planning on paying MSRP. If the first dealer won't make a deal its on to the next. Insurance is exactly how im looking at it, comes out to about $20-$25 a month depending on what you pay. But of course it could go to other things as well like paying off the truck. So mainly I was just looking to see if anyone had to use theirs or went the whole time without need it.

I'm not sure I need to read the paperwork, but some have claimed that Toyota will prorate a return if you go through the period of the extended warranty and no use it. If so that's a deal sealer. Again I'm not sure if that's the case.

if you need an extended warranty on any vehicle, then you should not had bought that vehicle brand in the first place....with proper maintenance and not driving like an idiot, you should not need an extended warranty, especially on a Toyota.

A good alternative would be to put a little bit of $$$ into a high interest savings account each paycheck and don't touch it until you need a repair. I did this when owning a BMW and it came in handy twice....

i never get an extended warranty on anything...if it was going to break in that time they wouldn't offer it....never had anything break in the time offered anyways no matter what it was...trucks, cars, tvs, etc.

Get it from Toyota I have already used mine for the Rear leaf TSB that would have cost me $2000 it's worth it.

    Please elaborate why?

This x999999999999 I got mine from the dealer for $800 and it's the 7/100 $0 deductible. Even covers towing to the nearest dealership, rental and hotel reimbursement.

This is a very inaccurate statement. All things break over time and need to be fixed. $850 is a small price to pay over 84 months for total care of a vehicle. That's $10.12 a month for assurance that you truck will run like a top for 7 years. That's about the best investment someone can make. That's less money tied up in a saving account that will give you less than 5% RIO over the course of 8 years when the money could be put to better use. Plus it wouldn't be an additional drain on income just to cover a repair that he may or may not have enough to cover at the time.

This really doesn't make any sense...

I have thought about the extended warranty but cannot bring myself to do it. With my last new Toyota purchase... I had the 7yr 100k platinum warranty. Everything was perfect, until 104k... At which point the warranty did not cover it. So, in hindsight, it was money terribly spent. Not gonna do the same thing again.

But who knows between now and 36k. Bare just broke 3500.

I say no to the extended warranty. To me it's worth it to roll the dice rather than pay for something you may never use. You stand the chance of never seeing that money again.

The only thing is, as a used truck, who knows how it was taken care of by the previous owner(s)...

i do, if you can afford a 30k truck, then get the warranty, whats a another 1k. (ballpark) you know the minute something breaks or warranty is over, a part will break and you will kick yourself. i always use it for what it is. my 03 mazdaspeed protege had 30k of warranty work, down the the floormat hook rusting. i am that picky. i am not made of money and a billion dollar company like mazda or toyota can afford to . screw the man. pay the little cost and be done with it. at least you have peace of mind

I would get it. While my truck has never been in the shop, my wife's pathfinder has. As a matter of fact it is in there right now getting the cats replaced. And It is way out of the standard warranty time. The extended warranty has saved me much $$. And def get the Toyota Ext warranty because the aftermarket/dealer ones are worthless. Especially if you move like I did.

Got the 8 year 125,000 as part of my deal on my 2010 DC, mainly for the bizzare electronic stuff, and I'm dumber n' jiminy jack snap when it comes to fixing stuff mechanically...got the truck from a pal at the dealership, so he threw in a bed extender and I got the whole package at a price at which I was WELL pleased...plus I plan on keeping the truck forever and ever amen, and figured it was worth it for me.:)
