Are the previous generation Pros commanding a premium in resale?

Not getting the whole Pro thing as a better investment. Typically modded trucks lose value over stockers and if you drive this truck as it's designed, no potential buyers want to pay top dollar on a truck that was run or wheeled hard.

    Am I missing something here?

Ford doesn't compete against the Tacoma yet, Raptor is full size so it competes against the Tundra Pro which has plenty of power.

I'll bet Toyota loses more potential Tacoma owners to the F-150 than the other way around.

They do. My buddy bought a base f-150 and paid less than what I did for my '16 TRD Sport.

Yep, feature/content/spec wise the F-150 and Silverado win when it comes to price. I went full size for a bit, just like my mid sized trucks better, but also know I'll pay for it too.

Two different markets, Toyota needs to worry about how good the new Ranger is, that's the Tacoma's competitor.

Midsize truck market has never been a "smart choice" in a financial sense. Price in the mid size high end models have always overlapped bare bones and mid trim full size trucks. You get the same gas mileage but are down on power but 85-90% of the physical size and weight. Also some double cab long beds are larger than a full size access cab.

Full size trucks get you more for your money, period.

We buy midsize trucks because we WANT midsized trucks, not because it makes sense. The market could easily disappear and we'd still be happy, only now we're driving full size V6 trucks.

Small quibble: Some people buy mid-sized due to garage room or (for example) turning radius off-road. Probably other reasons. But yeah, a lot of people buy for aesthetic reasons more than anything.

Yea, but motors are the same size, both are 3.5 v6 engines, toyota output 278,
    Fords 450 hp.
Toyota I think made a mistake by dropping the TRD supercharger for the new 3.5 motor and no power upgrade for it.
With the supercharger Toyota had the upper hand adding 100 horses to any Tacoma and staying ahead of the pack.
So now as it stands any older supercharged motor 3.4 or 4.0 motor puts out as much or more hp then a Tacoma Pro that cost 40,000.00.

Continuing to increase power in the Taco drives away sales from Tundra. The only way Toyota will start putting higher output motors in the Taco is if they kill off the full size lineup.

I don't need more power in my Tacoma, if I did I'd buy full size.

Buy a Jeep or SUV like a 4 Runner to fit in the garage or have a smaller turning radius offroad.

I test drove the Tundra Pro and wow. The horse power, the handling, the sound of the exhaust, all in all a great truck. But I wanted to buy a midsize truck already owning four full size trucks that just won't get in and out of those areas in and outside of town. I would love to have that Tundra motor in the Tacoma Pro but then again the fuel mileage issue would be an issue for me. Not that one can't afford the fuel or we would be looking at a totally different vehicle. Just stopping to fill it up so often would be taxing for me personally. Just being honest if I could get a Tacoma with a diesel motor that gets 30-35 mpg and the torque available when needed it would be perfect. Chevy is already doing it and I was really hoping this would happen for 2017 toyo models.

Guys I don't see anything on the new Ranger. People will prefer quality over horsepower though. I'd buy the Tacoma again and again before I bought a Ford.

Its coming in 2018. Ford makes a damn good product now. My mom's explorer and dad's f150 have been flawless with the ecoboost. Both have had less issues than than new tacomas have, I would say Toyota and Ford are pretty close in QDR, Toyota just has a perceived higher reputation/expectation.

And that's what the Tacoma Pro will provide compared to the Tacoma TRDOR. Everything else is fluff.

I was driving yesterday here in San Antonio and saw an odd looking and what I thought ugly mid sized truck and when I got closer, it was a new 2017 Ford Ranger, then saw the plate on it were from Mexico!
