Updated with info to purchase the brake line spacers and extended travel bump stops separately, for use with the 6112s, often cumulatively referred to as the Baja hardware kit. Credit to @JD'STaco for work on tracking down the part numbers and the new bump stop comparison photo.

 

I'm just trying to make sure I understand the difference of these parts. The top part number for the clamp is for the e brake cables, and the main brake line spacer is for where the rear brake lines mount to the rear axle? I just bought a wheelers 3 leaf AAL which is the same as the Icon and I want to make sure I don't over extend any lines.

 

The clamp replaces the hard brake line clamp under the drivers side leaf spring. And yes the spacer goes where you mentioned. This is a picture with the new clamp.

 

Is the clamp needed or would the spacer be sufficient?

 

I would install it. That's your call. Not only does the clamp come with the Baja kit, but it also comes with the Bilstien 5160's.

You might consider the Pro kit instead of the Baja. I say this because the Pro has a 600lb spring rate, and the Baja 650lb. With the lighter nose of the 2.7L I might be concerned the ride would be overly stiff.

Hey I was just wondering what's the life expectancy for these shocks if you don't beat on them too much? Are they serviceable? If so, what do you have do to maintain them?

 

Oh I also meant to ask you if you don't do the AAL is the truck gonna be leveled? And I didn't quite understand earlier on this threat you were saying that the OEM leaves would couple well with the heavier rated springs up front? Does the Tacoma Baja edition run the same leaf pack as the 2015 off road?

 

It going to be leveled without the AAL. With the AAL it'll give it the factory rake.

 

Yes the Baja runs the same rear leaf as the 2015 TRD OR. It will be leveled without the AAL.

I'd expect the shocks to have an above average lifetime, where 60k is average. Supposedly the 6112s are serviceable if you send them in, but if they are labeled TRD they are not serviced by Bilstien. Regardless I would consider both versions not serviceable.

The only maintinence item for cosmetic purposes would be to coat them in fluid film periodically to prevent cosmetic surface corrosion.

 

Have you found a solution for the e brake cable or is it still zip tied to the truck? I think I'm about to get this but not sure how much of a headache the progressive AAL is gonna be in terms of cutting/grinding and lines getting too tight. Do you think a 2'' leaf pack paired with the baja will result in a huge rake? I guess not that bad though if you consider the front baja gives 1.75'' and the truck is level, then with 2'' extra the back will only be .25'' higher. Does that sound right?

 

That sounds right. My truck has a progressive ICON AAL and it has a very slight rake. Actually it looks level. I left out the helper spring.

I've been running mine for a little over 30k miles now with absolutely no issues. I've haven't abused them but I do drive very spirited, and like to go fast on dirt when I can. I called and spoke to Bilstein last year regarding the 'rebuild-ability' of these and they basically said yes, they are rebuild-able. However, due to their agreement with TRD/Toyota and because these are TRD branded shocks, they don't want to touch them at this time and would refer owners to go thru Toyota. Something to do branding. The vibe I got was if they were just Bilstein's and you wanted them rebuilt then sure, but since these are Bilstein made for and sold thru TRD/Toyota, we (Bilstein) are more hands off. That said, I feel like if you wanted to pay them to do it, they prolly would.

 

The cable clamps are zip-tied to the next most forward clamp near the rear of the cab but the cable itself is free floating to allow for more flexibility at max droop. I didn't have to do any cutting or grinding on my leaf pack for the 3 leaf progressive AAL, but some others have.

I think you are going to have the tight line issue regardless of leaf pack brand if you mount the cable, as it is just a function of line length vs lift, and not anything special about this particular leaf pack. If you leave the overload in the 3 leaf progressive AAL will give you 2", or 1.5" if you remove the overload. With the 1.75" up front you are going to have 0.25" less rake by going with the 1.5" rear lift, or 0.25" more rake going with the 2" rear lift. It is a pretty small change to the rake either way you go.
