Sumo springs and off road flexing test

Sumo Springs seem to be a popular Trend around here.. since after 10 years of week Springs on the second generation Tacomas it appears that the third generation Springs are just as weak. So to support my roof top tent and bedrack and all my camping gear I decided to install the Sumo Springs to stop the sag. I was skeptical that these would be able to flex at all. But here are a few pictures to show that they do compress under normal off road conditions. I may have lost a slight amount of articulation but not a lot. Like others I did gain exactly five eighths of an inch of lift with these. On-road ride while unloaded is greatly improved with no body roll in the rear.

 

So they did jack the rear up a little bit? Good.

You probably be better off adding a leaf or new leaf pack. These springs would only be a band-aid if your stock springs are sagging without bed weight.

 

I have no weight in the bed in that picture. I haul and tow several days a week...

 

Right... so you need new springs AND the sumo springs if you tow a lot. Sounds like your towing might have killed the springs maybe?

 

In the last 5k miles i've towed up to 3500lbs and about 1500-2000 a bunch

 

@nevadabugle - where did you get the sumos and how much were they?

 

I have a shell on my truck that weighs ~200lbs, and I already notice it starting to sag. It's even worse once I have gear in the back.

I plan on lifting at some point, so I was just going to wait. But if these sumos are cheap enough and fix the sag without compromising off-road ability, then that's pretty badass.

My truck does too. Kinda ridiculous for a new truck to sag under the weight of just a couple hundred pounds.

 

I've got Sumos on my 2007. I'll put 'em on my 2017 when it magically appears in my driveway next month.

Ordered. I've been thinking about these for a while but wasn't too sure about them. Thanks for the pics and quick review about them. We tow an a frame style pop up and it sags quite a bit when hooked up. We'll be taking it to the mountains again this weekend so these will be perfect and be here Wednesday which is perfect for a quick install.

 

Just put on my set this weekend.

Install was super easy. Maybe 45 minutes total. Increased height of rear end 1/2" - 5/8".

Was looking to do 2 things.
1) Increase height of rear end at least 1/2". Since factory rake is 1" between rear and front. The rear end now sits 1.5" - 1.75" higher than the front end. I am getting in my Bilstein 6112's for the front on Wednesday. Plan on setting them to the 3rd height setting raising the front end 1.75" (probably settle to 1.5"), thus having a perfectly level truck with at least a 1.5" lift in the front.

2) I tow my Polaris Ranger, especially during hunting season, and didn't want my rear end squatting as much... figured this would help out. Looks like it will.

Install tips:
- Jack body of truck up (not the rear axle) to get some working room between axle and body. Good place to put the jack is under the receiver hitch.
- Clamped the leaf pack together... just in case... probably not necessary.
- Loosen four bolts holding the U-bolts. I just loosened them all the way so the nut was flush with the bolt, no need to take them all the way off.
- No need to take the tires off, if you jack up the body you should have enough room to squeeze your head over the rear tire, in the tire well, and get a good look at what you're doing.
- Slip the factory bump stop out, slip in the new SumoSpring, center, and tighten the U-bolt back up in a X pattern (like you would lug nuts). U-bolt torque is 52-ft. lbs.
- Repeat on other side, and you're done!

I also went ahead and installed a set of Bilstein 5160's for the rear end as well, to pair with the 6112's I have coming in this week.

 

Has anybody measured the sumos compressed compared to stock bump stops? I'd be interested in knowing how much articulation is lost with the sumos.
