    Thanks Randy, good info. I have looked around at some lift kits for the IFS (required for enging swapping) & for what they cost I agree that I would be better off with an SAS, no argument from me. My plan is to start with the basics. First get it running right & make it reliable, this could take a while. Second, get some decent 31" tires & a spool (or other cheap locker, maybe even a "Lincon Locker") for the rear & wheel it untill something blows up, even at stock hiegth. Fix the weak link & do it again. Finally, once all the bugs are worked out I will get serious about the SAS & engine swap. This will be a slow build for sure, but my Tacoma is getting DAMN close to being paid off so hopefully I can just take it slow and work on it as I can afford too.


    Let there be no doubt.......I plan to get my money's worth out of this thing even wheeling it in stock form. You guys don't mind pulling me out right??

    I would still like to hear if anyone has / had this engine & tranny combo & how sturdy the transmission is / is not. I know that the 22re is tough, but the auto is not the norm for these trucks. I don't expect it is going to have much get up & go.

    Does anyone know what ratio gears it has stock?

    Go for it Rob! This rig looks sweet!
    But like Andrew said, check the WHOLE thing for rust, because I see contractors that paint mold in houses to hide it from sellers. So, I would be questionable about the rhinoliner.

    and yeah it'll be a slow build, but parts are cheaper for it (You don't need all the expensive little shit that goes in the interior) and you don't have to worry about tearing it up.

    And I'll pull you out! I just got some new tow straps the other day. :D

    And I wouldn't worry about making it street legal because then it has to pass inspection and have insurance, but if it can pass, then all the better!

    And you would be correct, After some reading on Yotatech.com I have decided that this 4runner likely has 4.30 gears. The 4.88's where for auto equiped 22re's with 31" tire package, which was not avaliable in 86. Once I get it home this weekend I will jack up the rear & count the drive shaft revs per tire rev.

    anyone no about the trans?

    Agreed, I really would prefer the auto, just wondering how tough of a trans it is & how much power it robs you of. I'm sure that in 4low it will have plenty of power, just wondering how it does on the highway.
