Hi Kerrdog, shift flair is when the engine revs up between shifts. It's like the vehicle goes into neutral (for a short time) while upshifting.

Please keep us updated. I have the flair and a hard downshift into 3rd, 2nd, and 1st gear on the downshift (about 2k since TSB). I'm pissed about this whole situation. I had an F150 5.4L that need a tranny build last year, which is why I got this Tacoma.

David, you may have a bad transmission. Toyota admits there is a problem with this transmission. Did you call
1 (800) 331-4331 and open a case? Tacoma owners, with these issues need to get these complaints in. Toyota is well aware of what we are saying here on TW, but..... they are motivated by numbers and statistics. We need to get these legitimate complaints into their "numbers" system.

Does Toyota have any written documentation admitting the problem? I'd like to have it for my records in case I need to talk to an attorney.

Nothing that I am aware of, but I certainly would like a copy as well. Toyota is pretty smart in limiting their liabilities.

For what it's worth...I had bought a 2 day subscription to Toyota's techinfo and noticed that was a TSB (0079-15) for the 4 cylinder versions for the 2-3 shift flare fixed by a software update. From what I saw skimming over the shop manual was the 6AT for the 2TR and 2GR are the same.

Yes, the transmission may be the same, but the engine/transmission control strategies are a bit different.

All, I started a new 3rd gen thread to encourage people to pull together and engage Toyota through their 800 number. Please read the thread, and let's all band together and get something done.

    Here is Stefen,s answer
    Hello,
We have a specific kit for the both the ac60f used here in Hilux, fortuner and Prado. And a750e/f as used in 4x4 and 4x2 trucks. Both kits although unique operates exactly as per our landcruiser wagon kit as seen on Australian images build.

Speed signal and lockup wiring would have to be referenced to specific ecm of 4 runner and Tacoma.
This is easily done with workshop manual.

Pricing is $675.00 AUD plus freight to US.

    Regards Stefan Richards.

Very interesting indeed. I have some thoughts, and please correct me if I am wrong. I think our factory ECMs operate under a much different strategy than the Hilux. It seems that our ECM/TCM combination is always locking and unlocking the TC at all different speeds and load conditions to try to minimize fluid losses in the TC. It also seems the TSB is more ambitious to keep the Tacoma TCs in lockup on the highway. It seems, aside from a gearing/engine torque curve mismatch, the Tacoma code works pretty well. The Tacoma's 5th and 6th gear ratios (with a 3.91:1 axle) are a terrible match to the torque curve of the 3.5. Shift point adjustment could mask it off a little, but the mismatch still exists.

Also noteworthy is that the Hilux is a turbo diesel with 17% more overall torque (probably a much higher percentage of torque in the lower RPMS) than the 3.5 gasoline engine, so with the good lockup, and different engine load settings for downshifting points, the Hilux can power through the low revving 5th or 6th gear much better than I can with the US Tacoma.

It seems to be most apparant with a cold transmission, might see the flair between 3Rd and 4th once or twice then the symptom may disappear. It's a bump up a few rpms then it settles into the next gear as it shifts from what I've seen of the videos. Been looking for it specifically in the morning on my truck but haven't seen it yet.

js, I would target to catch the flair when the motor is dead cold and while accelerating at about 18% - 27% throttle (estimate) through the gears. There may be a torque converter lockup occurring in 3rd that looks like a shift, but it is not an actual shift.

That's when I'm looking, first thing in the morning after an overnight, truck sits outside so it's as cold as the ambient air at least.

    Not seen it yet.

I have recorded 5 consecutive days my transmission failed with less than 500 miles on the truck. I filed a complaint with Toyota corporate. They told me to work with the dealer. So, I followed their instructions. The dealer cannot replicate the issue after having the car for a total of 5 days (two separate tickets). The dealer test drove the truck, and in addition, says their computer shows everything is operating to specification. It is clear that the dealer is not empowered to solve my problem unless they can log something with their Techstream, which likely, cannot diagnose a transmission.

To date, Toyota has not solved this and/or assured I was a satisfied customer. I am hoping this will change very soon.

To be fair, I will certainly report how Toyota takes care of me if and when they do. I am putting faith in Toyota to stand behind their product.

In my humble opinion this is a great way to get Toyota to address the engine/transmission issues.....Mass media.
