The thing with tuning these trucks is as far as I can tell the "Atkinson" cycle part of this motor is simply the VVT system in low rpm low load situations keeps the intake valves open longer. The inherent character of that is the lack of low end torque, If you were able to tun the VVT tables in the ECM you could effectively get rid of that and make it an otto cycle engine all the time and possibly regain some low end.

Not yet... Truck has been getting some work done the last few weeks while I've been traveling for business. I absolutely will share the results though when complete.

some people would swap the GS heads just to have headers.... I assume the GS doesn't have the collectors cast into the heads?

The single port heads make more power on the new GM 3.6's vs the 3 port style

With the EcoBoost engines tuning involves about $500 and 5 minutes. I used a canned Livernois Motorsports tune on my stock 2013 SHO and took it from 365HP/350TQ (at 1500 RPM) to around 440HP and 440TQ at same RPM...that tune took the car from mid-13 second quarter miles to a 12.8-ish quarter mile. In addition to a bump in power the tune also made significant improvements to the transmission, which was pretty solid to start with.

That said, both the 2.3L or 2.7L engines would be awesome in our trucks at their stock numbers. Ford is doing it right these days, no doubt about it and I can't wait to see their new Ranger.

I don't see turbos sticking around. It's a fad like the 80's/90's. Wait until these turbo cars go out of warranty and people start getting repair bills.

It's $1k+ to put a turbo on a Cruze. And they are cheap compared to most stuff

Turbos definitely not a fad. Allows manufactures to use smaller displacement engines (think EPA requirements for gas mileage) while producing power when you put the pedal down. I've had two eco boost trucks, one tuned and they are pretty amazing from a power standpoint.

Definitely not a fad, just something everyone is doing to make petrol engines more efficient. In a way it is a fad though, because petrol engines will be long gone by the end of the century. Most of the OEM turbos I've seen are garret units, not cheap units from ebay but I've only seen a handful of cars. It does complicate things nonetheless with more shit to go wrong. GMC turbo applications seem to be riddled with problems so good engineering is a must.

Yeah it goes like this. Forced induction will (already is) replace displacement then once batteries get just a bit better combustion engines will begin to fade out short of very large transport vehicles. Self driving all electric vehicles will be the vast majority before 2050 I think.

P.S. nVidia (NVDA) makes the best SOC (system on chip) for self driving cars at the moment and is investing heavily in research for it. Stock value has tripled in the last year even amidst a lofty unsure market.
