I'm not happy either with the constant hunting gears at highway speeds .
I called Toyota at that number and I've gotten nothing back for a week now.

Hi Sixgun, I am not sure there is a fix for that after the TSB. That issue is something we are stuck with. The engine doesn't make much torque below 2000 rpms. Most bolt-ons will not help that either aside from gears. A lower axle gear change would certainly help a lot, but I would check with Toyota about that. You may need some adjustment in the engine management code to have 100% compatibility. Cost will not be cheap either if you are 4wd.

I understand you have an issue when the truck is cold with the 2-3 gear shift flare. But keep posting about it like it's going to self drive off a cliff, isn't going to do much but aggravate the regulars here.

Most don't have the issue, the ones that do probably don't think enough about it to waste compute cycles. They just move on.

Think about it: When the truck is cold and once during the first 2-3 shift, the rev hangs a tiny bit than normal, and completely goes away when the truck is warm isn't really a huge concern to most folks here.

If you're concerned about long term reliability--as someone also mentioned this also happened on the 2nd gen, then i'm not seeing a whole lot of rebuilt transmissions going on in the 2nd gen.

I think the biggest mistake is letting a 'toyota engineer' tell you that there's an inherent flaw with the transmission, and letting your mind run wild with that.

Anyways, good luck with your truck.

Check this out: The aftermarket is working on this in Australian vehicles with the Aisin AC60F transmission... Their solution looks like some of what the TSB corrected.

Hi Stan. My main shift flair is from 3-4 when cold (about 1000 rpm flair). However, the problem is getting worse now. Now I am getting 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 flairs when at normal operating temperatures. The flairs, when at operating temperature, are about 100-200 rpm. I have about 450 miles on my truck.

I assume you've been to the dealer, and when you told them what you said above, they probably looked at you like you're insane, right?

Let's be real. I don't see how any normal person can detect a 100-rpm shift flare!

Anyone that is just going "lol flare no big deal" should familiarize themselves with the infamous ford 5r55e transmission. It all started as a 2-3 shift flare...many ended in complete valve body rebuilds. Not a big deal if you're getting a new truck every few years, but don't expect it to be the good ol' problem free 150k tacoma.

Can't see any logical reason for a flare to be programmed into the transmission intentionally. All signs point to valve body/solenoid mechanical or control issues.

Hi Stan, you can see the rise on the tachometer. The flair may be a little more that 100 rpm... I just don't want to exaggerate. The issue appeared over the last week. There is likely a fluid pressure leak down(s) within in the valve body or the pressurized circuit end caps. The Service Manager, and his technician, are on the same page as me as far as the symptoms are concerned. He saw the issues as well. Are you familiar with how the modern automatic transmissions work Stan? They are quite intricate.

Well said aero90, and I am sure Toyota and Aisin Seiki did not intend for this issue to occur.

The fix is coming from nitro gears in about two months .. 4.88 or 4.56.
Expedition over lander got the prototype done and so far they're loving it and getting 5 to 6 miles per gallon better .
Put RPM range up to 2200 at highway speeds. Got mine pre-order through my shop already.

That's great sixgun! I would like to move my front and rear gear ratios a little (maybe a 4.30:1) just to settle down the constant up and down shifting on a hilly highway. For now I just use S5 to hold gear and keep the abuse down.
