Aftermarket speaker suggestions

What aftermarket speaker should I get?

What cab configuration do you have? Regular, extra, double?

Crutchfield has got a lot of options just just type in your model vehicle and they give suggestions. I just bought some Pioneer 6x8's for the front doors and a couple of no name ones for the back doors (I've got a Dbl cab) and it set me back a little under a hundred dollars ($97 to be exact). Haven't installed them yet but I'm sure they'll sound great with the JVC deck I bought from them. They also include pretty good instructions.

 

Go to an audio shop and listen to a few brands to see what you like. Just make sure you set the EQ to flat on the head unit when you test, use the same song.

 

For $250 I'd buy a nice pair of speakers and an amp to power them.

 

$250 won't really get you a 'nice' set of speakers and an amp. It will get you a set of 'decent' speakers and an amp.

 

My Polk Audio db651s speakers are pretty nice. Granted they aren't Focals but they are nice. Powered with a Sound Ordinance 2-channel amp, they sound great.

I spent $130 for the three components. Granted the amp was on sale but the one I have is now selling for $100.

I'd much rather have that set up, replete with about $75 worth of sound deadener and ensolite in the doors, than a pair of $300 Focals that are unamplified and put into tin can doors.

4 speakers and an amp for $250 wont get you out of the lower end products.

And like already said. Sound deadening goes quite a ways itself.

 

I ran w/o back speakers for over a year and was fine.

Only got them because Crutchfield had the same pair on sale for $60.

 

I never run back speakers. Kills sound staging.

 

Turns out not many speakers on Amazon come in 6in variations (biggest speaker size without having to maul the inner door and cab for a '98), so I went for

Kenwood DDX373BT Double Din Monitor in-Dash Bluetooth DVD Receiver

Kenwood DDX373BT Double Din Touchscreen. I was trying to avoid getting a sub for now and these are a great alternative. Lots of bass and range.

 

This might be a silly question, but has anyone considered installing 6.5" subwoofers in the back walls of an xtra cab? When I had my rear speakers out, there seemed to be a tremendous amount of air space in there. Would it rattle? Would sound deadening / insulation help?

 

I've seen people put them under the bench seats in the storage compartments in the Xtra Cabs.

Yeah, I've seen those as well, but I keep a bunch of stuff in those cubby holes. I've been searching the Google-sphere for the last hour for Xtra cab tacoma subs and all I get is dozens of different boxes or the cubby hole mod. The holes where the xtra cab factory speakers go is huge, you could probably even trim the plastic and fit 8" subs in there, it's probably about 4" or 5" deep. Someone has had to have tried it before, but I can't find any info either way.

 

You might be able put an 8 Inch sub in there. You'll need to make a fiberglass box for them. Someone has fit 8 subs in the 2nd Gen on here. Pretty sure 1st gens can do it. If not 8 a 6.5 will work for sure.
