Maybe they added some oil and forgot to put the cap back on.

I'm surprised that you haven't gotten a check engine light yet.

 

I would be more surprised if there was a sensor for the cap being installed or not.

 

Obviously not mechanically schooled. Not sure about the 3.5 but there are motors out there that with the dipstick pulled or the oil cap missing the crankcase pressure/vacuum can't be maintained and you'll get a long term fuel trim code.

 

Yep, Toyota has entered the mid-2000s with their all new Tacoma. Pretty impressive until you look at other trucks on the market. That said, I prefer a simple truck so I'm not complaining.

 

I lost my cap on the first oil change that I did at 5000 miles. I unscrewed it and then promptly dropped it into the engine compartment. It didn't hit the ground, just totally disappeared. I did find it again but it had lodged in the ledge between the rad shroud and the radiator. How it got there from me dropping it, I'll never know. Took me several hours to find it. Dealer will change my oil from now on as I have lifetime oil changes with them.

I would definitely change my oil and filter, I think the dealer owes you a cap.
