2001 does not unlock upon first try TSB question

Hello all, my 2001 is victim of TSB EL006-01, sometimes when I unlock the truck with the remote fob, the alarm turns off, but the doors do not actually unlock.

TSB EL006-01 offers a part number for a new "#1 junction box" to fix this issue. There is an 04 junction box for sale that does not match this new part number, but obviously would not have the issue as well. Do the Taco gurus here know if an 04 #1 junction box would be PNP with my 2001?

 

Anyone with access to FSMs or Toyota part number systems, are the #1 junction boxes the same across certain year models? I would imagine this is a part that isn't different except to fix the 01 issue.

 

Interested to see the answer to this. My 01 does the same thing. If there is a part number for a fix, that would be great.

The TSB (google EL006-01) has a part number of the 'new' 'revised' 'fixed' box, but I have the 04 part out guy saying his does not match that new number. I wouldn't be surprised if 02-04 works, but I don't want to learn the hard way when I know there is a guru somewhere that can pull that part up and know for sure it's cross-compatibility.

 

Part number for the fix is 82730–04030. Old part number listed on the TSB is 82148–#####...

 

Huh, I have a problem with my rear doors not wanting to lock sometimes and I have to go back and manually jimmy the lock lever itself to get it done.

 

^^ Thats not part of the TSB, sounds more mechanical, maybe something sticking.

I found a site that sells a range of used 82730–040xx (11, 10) boxes as 01-04. I need to look at my unit's part number so we at least know which one to avoid.

So annoying, it never happens via the manual switch, and always works if I lock it with the remote (after a failed remote un-lock), then un-lock via remote. So IMO its not the controller itself, but IMO a bad variance in a solid state component. IMO its probably just a pull-up resistor or other component change in the box that gets rid of the issue... Maybe time to just take a swing at metering some inputs and getting frisky with replacing some things...

 

I had this same issue on my 2001 Tacoma. I saw the TSB and tried to purchase the part from two different OEM sites listed price of $217~$237. I ended up with a junction block from a salvage yard in California at a cost of $99 shipped. The block came out of an 2002 Tacoma, so the last digits of the part number were different (my 2001 Tacoma: 82730-04030, the 2002 Tacoma was 82730-04022). I swapped out the boxes in about 30 mins or less. I numbered the clips as I removed them 1-->13 which made plugging them into the replacement block quick and easy. I have been driving the truck now for two weeks since I swapped the junction block with no issues. Only thing I noticed is different is the blinkers sound is louder and higher pitched.

Salvage yard I got my part from: Japanese Truck Dismantling $99 shipped -used.
Other OEM site which claimed they couldn't confirm 82730-04030 was right for my truck even though I was holding the bad block in my hand: Mid Atlantic Autoparts $237 new.

 

Thanks for posting up in this. I bought a used box here, I don't remember the year so it could be anything from 02-04 I guess, but I haven't slapped it in yet.

 

I asked my brother in-law who is a mechanic if putting in this block from the next year would cause any harm. He said no. It would work if it was right or not work at all and not cause any harm. The model years you would be looking for is '01 through '04. Good luck.

 

Awesome, and figured as much. So fricken annoying with this non-unlock first try thing, especially when your with someone and they are trying to get in the truck and you have to tell them to wait as you cycle unlock, lock, the unlock again haha.

I'm going to crack the original one open and see what is inside-- very curious if this is a 'chip' thing, or if I see some analog stuff it its simply a resistor/cap value that was changed...
