I had a delay in p to d and had the tranny filled at my last service after considerable bitching. They did not tell me how low i was. I used s5 a lot prior but i seem to be a lot more stable now with less shifting. I only drive 8 miles to work each day and now use drive because of the stability and better flat ground gas mileage. On the highway is where i think s5 works best and i plan to try drive now that i have had a fill but if it continues to shift like crazy i will go back to s5.

I am going to go ahead and just call bullshit on anyone in a '16 Taco who routinely travels at speeds of 70+ mph averaging 25+ mpg per tank. That is my driving scenario exactly and i average 17.5 and have for the last 22K miles. My only mods are BFG KO2's and a LEER 100xq.... that's not robbing over 7 mpg from my observed economy.

I routinely get 21.X mpg with a manual transmission 4x4 on my commute to work which involves at least 25+ miles of highway at 70-75 mph.

And that has 2 steeper hills, one which requires 4th gear to get up it at speed.

I don't think 25 is far fetched for an auto 4x2, especially if it is a roughly flat road.

The truck he's driving is rated at 19 city / 24 hwy.... 21 COMBINED. I like a feel good story too... doesn't mean it's true.

4x4 AC TRDOR and I average a solid 20-21MPG. Drive 50+ miles a day in mixed city/hwy. No mods to impact mpg. Granted, FL is pretty flat, but the parts I drive have some mild up/down hill stuff. If you're only getting 15, you're doing it wrong.

I didn't even get that mileage when my truck was stock and I'm far from it now.

Me either and although Atlanta is definitely not flat, i wouldn't think that it is 4 mpg hillier.... Hell, that's roughly 20%!

From what I've heard Ford's 10-speed transmission is great. Of course the EcoBoost engines they pair them up with have the technology and performance to move their trucks down the road.

Fuelly don't lie. On two trips across TN on I-40 70-80 the whole way I got 22.46mpg in April and 24.12 in August. Stock tires, my bed cover might have some impact on mpg but I doubt it. Shorter trips (say an hour or two) the dash comp calculates about the same. What brings my averages down is I only get about 19.5 - 20 on my morning commute, which is still mostly highway at 55-60 but more traffic and more hills to pull (one long hill is a school zone). I did recently find I can get 22 on my morning commute if I turn the AC off and roll the windows down.

the best mileage i get is about 63 miles per hour on the highway and i do even better on backroads going slower. I have seen 22 a few times but not over an entire tank

I have a 4wd TRD OR DCSB with the automatic. I bought it in March used with 5K miles. I'm currently sitting in a campground in Montana with about 22K on the odometer. In the last month I drove it from California to Connecticut, then back west. I've got a shell and a Tepui rooftop tent that adds quite a bit of drag, and a pretty full load in the back seat and bed. With all that, I have often had it in S3 on highway grades to maintain decent speed without constant upshift/downshift cycling (here in Montana the speed limit is 70 on 2 lanes and 80 on Interstates). Anyway, until my trip odometer and cumulative gas mileage reset spontaneously in Yellowstone (and again soon after crossing into Montana) I had averaged 22.4 mpg from California to the East Coast and back to Wyoming. Crossed the Cascades, Continental Divide multiple times, Appalachians, DC and NY rush hour etc. I think that's pretty good. Bottom line is that speed and throttle are your enemies, cruise control doesn't help either, (no chance to get the TSB yet), and power is weak below 2800 rpm or so. It's very hard to get the tranny to shift to 6th unless you're going downhill. But honestly, after all these miles in varied conditions, I'm pretty happy with the mpg. I don't expect the TSB to perform a miracle and do expect to use both S mode and ECT in D, as appropriate, to get the right throttle/rpm/speed "feel". In other words, drive it like a clutch-less manual. Interestingly, I drove my old 3.4 truck with auto trans in 3rd and 4th on the highway; this one has the bonus of a 5th gear for level roads and a 6th for downhills. Not sure what I'd do with a 9 or 10 speed :)

Only way to get the auto to perform suitably is to drive it like a "clutchless manual?" And you're ok with that? People are that accepting? "Oh well Toyota, A+ for effort at least you tried" and that's ok?

Oh well, maybe if that's the case more people will just buy manuals and we'll have more manual options in new cars/trucks rather than a dying breed.

Unless you are using a pen and paper, those gauges are highly inaccurate. Just do a google search. Some trip/mpg computers are off by nearly 20%.

I'm "OK" with it ... though ideally I agree, I suppose shouldn't have to. I haven't owned any modern auto trans cars so I don't have much to compare it to. I drove a rental Impala in the Smoky Mtns about 4 years back and while it had enough torque to easily handle grades uphill, it didn't offer enough control to select the right gear for downhills, and I had to ride the brakes a lot. So no AT is perfect. But 95% of the time I stick the Tacona in D and it's fine. I was referring to the corner cases of a heavy load plus roof top tent plus altitude plus grades at high freeway speeds. By the way, the top end power on this motor is very nice even at 11000' !

Wow, jump to conclusions much? I drive mine like an automatic and I'm perfectly happy with it.
