Here's my problem (Tires/Wheels/Diff)

As many of you already know, I just picked up my 2017 OR 4x4. My plan was to replace the current tire and wheel configuration with KO2 and TRD Pro Wheels 17x7. However, reading this forum has made me reconsider. Many people here are reporting rear Diff howling problems and I am afraid to change out my current 265/70/16 for 265/70/17. I spoke to a dealer rep about this yesterday and he told me if you change the current OR tire/wheel configuration the warrenty will be vioded. I have to disagree with that. Moving up 1 inch in tire size and putting Toyota TRD Pro rims which by the way I checked the Toyota parts site and it stated that the TRD Pro wheels fit the tacoma.

Due to the rear diff howling noise that is being experienced by serveral owners is making me reconsider this move. I now am thinking about just getting some Nitto Grapplers 265/70/16 and just forego the new wheels for now. When and If Toyota comes out with a perminate fix for the rear diff howling I will go with KO2 265/70/17 and TRD Pro wheels. The OEM OR tires I just cant live with. Thoughts

 

Why don't you get what you want? The diff is not howling and the dealer rep doesn't know $h!t.

 

Put on the wheels/tires you want.

If you do get some diff noise, put the stockers back on and head to the dealer.

They have to prove without reasonable doubt that your modifications CAUSED the failure for it to void warranty.

The law is there to prevent this exact load of shit from happening and to prevent gouging of the customer on maintenance items that they can do themselves.

 

You are correct but this sales rep was implying that if I went with the new tire and wheel configuration and my rear diff started acting up Toyota may not be responsible for fixing my rear diff. I know that is a crock of shit since there have been documented cases already about the rear diff failing and these trucks still have the OEM tires and wheels. You know what in thinking about this a bit more I am going with my original plans. I am going to go ahead with KO2 and TRD Pro wheels. Sales people don't know jack shit

Well based on other people's experiences they might not fix it no matter what. "That's normal" seems to be the magic words to avoiding any sort of warranty repair.

 

I had a rear diff leak, had my 285/70/ 17 installed on 4runner pro wheels with a spacer lift kit. Dealer fixed the leak no problem.

 

the sales person telling you this is probably slightly mentally retarded. those people never know shit all about what they're talking about. i typically suggest they don't talk to me unless i ask the a question, just saves us all the headaches of their stupidity. get the shoes you want for your truck!

 

Don't be fooled by the idea that since the law is to protect you, they will just fix it if you point it out. They can deny your warranty and you can do nothing to force them to repair it on their dime without a lawyer, if they go that road. I'm not sure about you but I'm not interested in spending time and money in court to prove something while my truck sits idle, broken. Just something to consider.

Putting the same size wheel and tire combo that's on the TRD Sport on and TRD OR will NOT void anything. Tell the dealer to quit sniffing glue. The dealership has to PROVE your changes caused a problem to void a warranty.

It's called The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act; throw that down on the dealer next time they say anything about voided warranty sheesh. The burden of proof is on the manufacture NOT the owner to prove other wise.

Is your rear diff howling?? Worry about shit when it breaks and not what you read on a forum. They made over 150K of these trucks and you're worrying about a handful of issues. Mod your truck.. dealers do it all the time BEFORE they put these trucks up for sale. I've seen a dealer option on an OR with 22" wheels looked like shit ... still has a warranty.

 

Basically what the service department is tell you is that all those modded Tacomas done by the dealer such as lift (suspension or spacer), wheels and tires, vinyl stickers, etc. even though you bought it from the dealer, your warranty is void because its not a factory part. Makes 0 sense. Time to find a new dealer.

 

Haven't read all of these but just based off your curiousity I would say 1. Find another dealer and make friends with service guys 2. That rep is a rep and wouldn't know the first thing about the engineering of these babies.

All this stuff will be resolved and whether you drop on 265/70/17 or not warranty is 100% in your favor

 

I wouldn't be worried about it. Hell there is enough documented cases listed on this site that if you went to arbitration it would be a 'slam dunk'. The fact that it occurs regularly with stock tires and rims only strengthens the case.

If it was only recognized in cases where larger rim/tire sizes were used- THEN you would have issues.
