Because Toyota finally realized its not the 90's anymore and dumped the whiny, under powered, outdated, gas guzzling 4.0 for something a little more sophisticated. I'd take the 3.5 any day. Now if you were to ask why would they pair that new tranny with the 3.5, then you'd be asking the right question.

Oil companies will Bank a bunch of money before they start putting more capital into drilling, etc. They took a ton of losses last few years.
