I rode a motorcycle for years in FL as my sole vehicle. Good rain gear, goggles, and waterproofing on your boots are a must. If you are going to ride with a helmet with a visor, rub some fog-ex inside it, too. That helps a lot.

I am relocating back to Vancouer wa when the apt I want opens.. its about 5 miles from work. and yes you are right! I would never take this scooter on the freeway either otherwise I would be road kill our freeway speed limit is 70mph which is what this scooter can do MAX... with a guy half my size....

I am inexperienced when it comes to riding I get my endorsement next month... I plan on getting the modular full helmet that the front flips up.... Do you have any experience with those?

10 mile commute equals roughly 1 gallon of gas costing at most 3 dollars right now. I personally would pay 3 dollars a day not to put on rain gear and look like grape ape riding around town.

Yes, and depending on how much you want to spend, you can get some really nice ones. My all-around preference was an open face with a flip down visor, DOT approved, but I also wore a full face when it was monsooning, or just some sunglasses when riding around town.

If you look around even a little you can get decent gear with rain-proofing and some armor that looks pretty stylish. Lots of sport bike guys wear stuff like that.

There's more to a 5 mile commute than gas use.

Starting his truck and driving 5 miles before turning it off, letting it sit for a work day and then doing the same home will pretty much mean the truck never sees normal operating temps unless it's driven outside of the commute.

Harder life on the drivetrain, for one.

I have a 60 mile round trip commute. I had purchased an older sport bike to save on gas, but I found I never rode it because here it's either 120°F or 25°F plus its a little impractical to transport three kids to school on a motorcycle. Sold it and bought a used Ford Fusion that gets 30MPG with a sweet manual transmission. I'm happy.

Yeah my first instinct was to buy a beater to DD.... but out here its pretty manageable to ride a bike and I think it would be more fun. also the commute is going to be back roads mostly and only 1 main road. so hopefully I wont have to deal with the shitty Portland drivers and the asshole Californians that moved up here <_<

yeah CA drivers are no joke... I remember cruising at like 70mph on the 405 and every inch of the road had a car and everyone was huddled together.... if one car fucked up 30 would get in a accident.

A lot of people ride the mopeds/scooters around here. We call them the DUI-mobiles cause you can legally ride a moped after you get your license revoked for a DUI, just not the higher CC scooters.
