I'd like to think this may have been a break in issue. So many people have only heard of engine break in because it's so controvertial, especially on this forum that I'm curious to how many people are even aware that u have to break in other things like brakes, differentials, and clutch.

"The first 100 miles are the most important, and you should therefore run the vehicle at typical street speeds (below 60 mph) for the first 10 to 15 miles. Then, allow the axle to completely cool off for at least 30 minutes, so you don't overheat and damage the internals. Repeat this until you reach the first 100 miles."

The problem with not doing that, and especially putting too much power through a new differential is all the heat causes the gears to lose their heat treatment. they get softer and wear quicker possibly causing noise and at worst blowing up. Heres a pic of a fucked up pinion just from a bad break in.

Put 800 miles on mine through the mountains in the first 2 days. Immediately changed oil and gear oil. Haven't had any issues

You shouldn't be having any issues after 800 miles. I scratch my head in amazement when people on here routinely jump for joy when they have little to no miles on their vehicles yet brag about not having any issues. That's the way it should be, no something you hope to have happen, then jump for joy when he thing doesn't shit the bed.

I did not know till I picked it up. That is what Toyota regional tech recommended they do.

I guess you could drive to the top of a long hill, undo the drive shaft, and roll it down in D or something. I wonder what VCS would think about that...

My diff only howls between 55 and 59 mph. I don't want them to drive front wheel drive at 57mph where it's loudest

Mine is an early build too. Got a little over 17k and haven't heard or sounds yet. Not sure if something changed in the later builds or if I just got lucky for now. What did you change the gear oils over too?

I think some of the differential issues didn't start occurring until 7500 miles or so. Smitty should be able to confirm.
