Suspension / body Knocking sound on cold days

This is my first winter with this truck, 09 TRD 4x4 O/R

The past couple of days it's been -5 to -9 degrees, and the truck has new, yet abnormal sounds coming from the front end when I go over bumps. At first I thought, maybe the shocks need time to warm up from friction.... But It sounds like the cab mount on the passenger side..

Picture this if you will...

Going over a bump, like a slightly counter sunken in manhole.... as the tire sinks into the depression in the road, the cab sinks with it, just a split second later, and then as the tire comes out from the hole, the cab comes up just a split second later... Causing a " "knock...."knock" sound..

Thats the best I can explain it.... Wondering if anyone has experienced anything remotely similar...

Another thing, slightly unrelated, but my steering wheel makes noise as I turn it when she's really cold.. kind of like something rubbing..
Not worried about that so much though...

For you, that would be about 20F

 

I'm not real sure what it is, but I just noticed my old 4runner making a similar noise. It also only just started doing it with temps in the teens.

 

down in alabama thats about as cold as it gets,and i'm glad cause i hate cold weather.mine is a 09 dc 4x4 and i have never heard mine do what you are talking about,could be a body mount i guess,does it quit when its warm?

 

I have a 95 extended cab and that is exactly what it did during the cold winters I drove it in Kansas. (I was stationed there) You may also get a god awful noise like some thing is really scraping against the entire vehicle...that will be your speedometer...it scared the shit out of me...but you may expect that if the speed-0 are cable driven in your vehicle.

 

Yep, only does it when its cold out.... I'm puzzled...

Could it be the shocks are stiff and need alot of movement to ''warm up'' ?

I might take her into the dealer when I get a chance... Just hard to replicate unless its cold out.

 

Midas put mine on a lift and couldn't find it and when I took it in to the dealer in topeka he couldn't find it either.....good luck

 

It has been -8F here the last week and my was making the same noise, once the truck warmed up it seemed to go away.

 

Ok, so I'm clearly not the only one with this issue...
I'll follow up with the dealer within the next week or two and come back and update this post with their findings if any...

 

Are you sure it isn't ice or frozen snow in your wheel wells? I get this allot in the winter months. Don't hear a thing until the suspension cycles.

 

Kinda funny my 09 did this the other day, it was about 18 or 20 degrees where I live.Only my noise was coming from the drivers side, sound like it was a similar sound. Dont know what it is,looked under dash, looked for ice chunks.looked for anything,it has since stopped.Called dealer so they are aware.Let us know if you figure it out.

 

lol...mine is doing it too. makes a clunking noise from the front left. i can feel it through the floor on in the area to the left of the brake peddle. its around 20F here. gonna bring it in a heated garage and wash it and remove any ice and start wiggling things around.

It ended up being snow/ice buildup in the inner wheel wells on both sides.
I still haven't washed it though.... But I know thats what the problem is...
Nothing to worry about, just annoying...

Ps. I dont have mudflaps, which may be the reason for this.

 

WOW...I was going to come in to work today and start the exact same thread. I have a loud knocking noise right under my feet on the drivers side. It sounds like something is loose in the suspension but everything seems to be working properly.

I also assume it is snow/ice buildup and need to get my truck warmed up to know for sure. I hope I don't have to wait until March to find out....

I do not have front mud flaps either.

 

haha nice. ya i came here tonight to post about how i brought it in the heated bays and washed it and let it sit for a few hours to melt anything else. i saw a lot of ice in crap through the cracks. i also have no mudflaps.

lots of small chunks of ice were in there though.

drove it home and silent again.

 

This is literally what I am experiencing. Front, driver side, knocking sound under my left foot from wheel well area, seems like something is loose, but everything looks fine. Haven't experienced it before winter. I live in Anchorage, AK so there's plenty of snow/ice. I don't park in a garage so I can't thaw anything out and see if it goes away. Has anyone solved this mysterious phenomenon? It sounds terrible.

 

I had that happen when the truck was still new (it's an '05). I used to get a knocking sound when going over over brake bumps, or washboard type of surfaces. It only happened when it was below 40 degrees outside. It ended up being the body mount bushings. At the time there was a TSB for this, so the dealership replaced them, and I haven't heard it since.

 

Thank you for the input. Hmm, is it something worth checking out myself to correct/replace or should should I pay the dealer/shop to do it? Sounds like if there was a TSB for it in the past and my truck is still doing it then the dealership should take responsibility.
