    On my 2G I had 265/75-16 BFG ATs. I brought it to the dealer I purchased the truck from and inquired about the suspension vibration TSB. They blamed my tires as they had a "very aggressive tread". I had the known passenger seat rattle and they blamed my tires (even though I replicated it when the truck was stationary).

    I put on my snow tires (265/70-16, highway tread) for the winter and went to a second dealer and had them drive it. They immediately recognized the vibration and started in on the TSB for the truck. The springs were about to be ordered for me and I had asked for a rental since the truck was still under warranty. At that point the service department head or someone who approved the rentals for warranty work stopped my claim because of the ARB bumper I had. They claimed that because my ARB caused the nose to sag 1" it affected the geometry of the rear enough to invalidate the TSB.

    Now,after I put my lift on, I was having the issue with the rough TC lockup / 5th gear engagement and went to the selling dealer to try and get the transmission TSB done which revised the shift points. I fully expected them to brush me off because of the lift/tires just like I was used to before.

    They put a new transmission in the truck under warranty. Didn't solve the problem because it was in the logic and not the mechanics of the driveline, but where I'm going with this is that tires can absolutely be a point of contention for warranty, or they may completely let it slide. You won't know until you have an issue.

    If they blame the howl on your tires, keep your OEM tires and swap em on and prove that it's not the tires.

    My dealership put those rims and different 265/70/17 wheels on and actually commented that the wheels will be covered under the truck factory warranty rather than the 12k parts warranty. Now I know they were taking about the rims, put they are the ones that suggested the upsize tire. Maybe shop around at dealerships. They are different. The dealer I bought my FJ from wouldn't put KO2s on in the factory size because it wasn't a trail team.

    Have seen some fine print signed when authorizing dealer to put on aftermarket parts too. Read EVERYTHING even the work order and receipt for parts and labor.

    Nothing inherently wrong with Smitty's comment. In fact you'd have to be an abject moron to be willing to pay out of pocket to fix manufacturers defects presumably covered under a warranty.

    Meh- good to have opinions from all sides.

    The bottom line is the manufacturer, not the dealer, has to deny the warranty work. If a dealership is blowing smoke up your ass over a 1-up tire size- go over their heads and in such a fashion to make yourself a rip-roaring asshole over the matter.

    Problem solved.

    As for me? I've got 6112's and 5160's ready to go on my truck. I'm waiting until after my first 5,000 mile check up to install them. I'm keeping the factory OR coils and shocks, related rear spring pack and wheels and tires in case;

    a. I don't like the non-stock ride or;
    b. I notice a potential failure in the driveline/suspension components that I am unwilling to pay for out of pocket.

    2-3 hours in the garage can potentially save me thousands of dollars.

    To each his own but ultimately I don't want to lose a battle over warranty work.

    there is no "over their heads". Dealers are their own entity. Just tell you to pound sand and take it to another dealer.

    But please, be an asshole. Techs do such quality work when people are being dickheads to them and the dealer.

    Oh yes there is an 'over their heads'. If the dealer denies to service a vehicle under warranty you can go right up the food chain to Toyota with your claim. In fact I did that once with a new Subaru, in the dealership, at the Service Managers Desk and opened my case with Subaru right then and there.

    Amazing how that got the issue resolved - when you fight them right there in front of other customers looking at new vehicles or getting their vehicles serviced.

    In fact you can go to any independent repair shop and they can file a claim for warranty work. Hell you can do it yourself if you want to. That's the protections afforded under the FTC regs, which every manufacturer that sells vehicles in the U.S. is required to adhere to with regards to 'warranty' work.

    I don't care if the service mgr or the tech's 'think I'm an asshole'. So what? That's simply one asshole being an asshole to another asshole.

    Wait... what?

    Did I somehow just get called an asshole??

    Listen if you want new tires and wheels - get them and put them on. I did mine with under 100 miles ... first tank of gas. Some guys here have them waiting when they take the truck home. It's not going to hurt the truck if it does you have a POS truck. Bigger problems just sayin.

    Don't go by @smitty99 - he's 1 of 150,000. Go by the majority which have no issues, other than being happy truck owners.

    Doctors orders:
    Get out and get the truck dirty & muddy and drive around town with the mud...spend tomorrow washing it... have a great day.

    And you're going to get the most piss poor work the tech is capable of. After they let it sit outside for a month before even working on it

    Never happened to me.

    If a tech wants to do that, then I'm sure they don't really want a job now do they?

    I've financed so many dealerships in my life I could have the owner out reaming a lazy tech in a heartbeat. Pull a copy of the Dealer Service Provider Agreement and warrants with the manufacturer and they'd march into the service bay and have my truck handled with white gloves.

    You seem to be defending lazy techs that don't want to do warranty work. Why is that?

    It's not my problem if other people are willing to have a dealer play games with them. I won't. And I'm capable of squeezing them too.

    Big frekin' deal.
