Woke up to a small puddle of oil and a mess under the hood this morning

2016 Tacoma TRD double cab with 3800km

Spotted a leak coming from a sensor on the valve cover. I normally park on gravel so I have no idea how long it's been leaking for

Dropped it off this morning and they called me this afternoon telling me they replaced the sensor along with the gasket and it still leaks. Now they have to dig into the issue and have no eta on when I'll get the truck back. And I've literally had it for a month.

Anyone else having issues or heard of this yet?

    Cheers,

    Evan

Which sensor is it? I'd call Toyota Corporate and start a case in the AM. Did the dealer give you a loaner?

Sorry I forgot to mention it was coming from the cam position sensor. I believe that's what they called it.

Dealer was hesitant to give me a loaner until they figured they could fix it before the end of the day as the only car they had needed to go out at 5pm.

And I will be calling Toyota first thing tomorrow.

The exact same thing just happened to me. My Tacoma is 3 weeks old and less than 3000 miles. The dealership took mine stating Safety concerns and gave me a loaner truck. The lead mechanic stated he has never seen this situation and they can't do anything until they hear back from toyota.

HA! At least they gave you a truck! I got put into a corolla after being told they can't give me a truck because I do use it for work..

Update. Truck still in shop, waiting for replacement valve cover. :(

So they have been unable to get a valve cover for two weeks? LMAO Really inspires confidence.

    UPDATE:

I just got my truck back this morning and the technician said that Toyota is well aware of this problem and it is starting to pop up all over. The technician found oil leak from bank one valve cover. He was instructed to remove cam journal and inspect for a pin hole in the surface. He removed it did the inspection added oil and applied shop air pressure. No air bubbles seen in cam journal. Reinstalled cam journal applied blue Loctite compound to cam sensor bolt torque to spec and that was it. The technician did say if it reappears Toyotas next level of corrective actions is to swap out cam journal it's self. let's hope it doesn't go that way

I am victim to this as well. I was at an intersection and seen smoke coming up from inside the hood when my truck ('16 white off road double cab 4X4) with only 1,200 miles on it!! Called the dealership at once and brought it in the next day and it was the cam sensor as well. Dealership gave me an identical truck as mine for a loaner. Had it back within 48 hours. Installed new sensor and cleaned the engine to make sure no more oil residue would drip on the manifold. They also said this was the first they seen this issue, but were going to contact Toyota headquarters about it.

I think I have the same thing. Leak from the passenger-rear side valve cover area. I took it to the dealership. Here is what they told me:

To be clear, it's not a film. There is a small puddle in my garage.

I have a new 2016 Taco TRD off road automatic 4X4 with the new fandangled V6. In my opinion, they should'a kept the 4liter. My truck has developed the same leak in the same place. Took it in once, they replaced the cam sensor....it was leaking before I got in home 3 miles into my garage. Next, they are going to replace the valve cover and gasket, on this coming Monday. Being a shade tree mechanic myself of some repute, I can't see how a cam journal could possibly cause oil to percolate up through the mounting bolt, but stranger things have been known to happen. It would seem that Toyota should have kept this back in R&D for another year or so. I have almost 4k miles on it, and I don't like the brakes, too touchy, and it is making some odd drivetrain noises, one would expect to find on a much older truck.
What really sucks the most, is, and this is rather embarrassing; is to be at a stop light, with a new Chevy canyon next to you, with oil smoke coming up out from under my hood, in a brand new , supposed to be bullet proof taco truck. I guess we will see how it goes with the repair and all, I will keep all posted.
