Hockey Puck Body Lift?

The other day one of my buddy's was telling me about getting a little body lift using hockey pucks. I mean when I think about it, it's an extremely hard rubber and it seems do-able. Has anyone ever done this? If so, a write up of this mod would be cool to see. Thanks guys.

What would be the advantage? Buying a body lift kit is cheap. Buying a bunch of hockey pucks and grade 8 bolts would probably cost just as much.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Not to mention, that's about as backwoods ghetto as possible. Maybe you could top your truck with a plywood camper shell.

Kinda reminds me of the scene in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence" where the author/narrator reccomends using a beer can as shim stock to tigten up the bars on his friend's BMW cycle.... If something suits the purpose at hand, why worry about what it started its existence as?

fwiw, I've heard the term "hockey puck" used as a slang term for the donut-shaped spacers that can be added to coilover assemblies (between the spring and the strut) to provide lift. Any chance the original reference wasn't just to a piece of sports equipment?

Doing a simple lift on leaf springs just requires some sort of spacer between the spring and the axle. Not sure I'd go with rubber since it might be prone to deterioration from incedental exposure to all the stuff (gas, oil, salt, various de-icing chemicals, sunlight, etc.) that'll show up under a car from time to time. Better off using a chunk of steel bar stock from a hardware store or a cheap lift kit (as long as it comes with good u-bolts and other hardware). The real problem with this kind of "poor man's" lift is that too many who do it fail to think of the other parts that can be affected (brake lines, driveline shafts and u-joints, etc) or whether their shocks have enough travel to deal with the new geometry propoerly.

Is your friend by any chance from Canada? Maybe Um... How can I say this... A particularly hilly place in Canada?

 

20 years ago we did this on a buddy's full size Blazer. It was not a great idea in retrospect. A lot of stuff no longer lined up properly. Yes, we used hockey pucks.

What you CAN use one of them for is to sit on the floor jack pad. That's lift, eh?

 

Hockey pucks are not a good idea because the rubber is not quality enough to handle the forces put on it. They have a tendency to crack and fall out (this is bad).

I would go to your local plastics supply store and have them make some pucks out of UHMW poly. I only paid $36 cdn for the 14 pucks I needed for my old '93 (2.75" dia x 2" tall).
