I know you are waiting to hear from Box Rocket, but I offer up my two cents here. I have the 3 person Ruggedized. Yes, it fits 3 in a pinch, but it would be tight. As in 18.66" per person. That's fine in a portaledge on El Cap, but if your trying to enjoy a few days off with the family?....Go with the 4. Ruggedized. Bam.

    Bman4X5,

I was looking for feedback from Box Rocket but I really appreciate your advice. I think you are right -- and have confirmed my suspicion that I need to go with a four-person tent. Thank you.

Right now I have narrowed my short list down to Tepui, Free Spirit (the Extreme) and Adventure Sole. I am trying to narrow down my list of desired features.

    Thanks again.

Thanks and went with a new company called iguanatents. They're located in GA which is only 2 hrs from me which is one reason I chose them.

Thanks. I totally understand. One reason I was leaning toward Tepui is that I can get them through our local REI -- which saves on shipping.

On some level, we are more about doing than the gear and it does appear that what ever tent we choose we can't go wrong ...

I was eyeing out the arb's @SoutheastOverland shop not long ago. They're very nice tents.

    Thanks for reaching out!

The Thule Xporter is a great rack for a tent, especially if you need the adjustability of the rack.

The Autana/Kukenam size will work for the 3 of you but if you want more room to stretch out or have gear inside with you then the 4-person Autana XL or Kukenam XL would probably be better. The Autana XL Ruggedized isn't available at the moment but I'll get an ETA on that.

The Ruggedized versions are all being updated to include the SKY windows. Non-Sky versions are still available while inventory lasts but future ones will all have SKY windows.

REI can be a good option IF they have the model you're looking for in stock. They don't always have the full lineup of tents available so they might not have the one you're looking for at certain times. Ordering directly through me will get you 10% off MSRP plus the low flat rate shipping, and I typically have everything available and ready to ship unless it's sold out at our warehouse.

Feel free to PM with specific questions if you have more, or call my cell. 801-710-8110. Thanks!

    @Box Rocket

Thank you for the very helpful and thorough response. I totally get it. We will get the four person tent -- the bigger the better I think. Will definitely wait until the tents with sky lights are available. We were looking at the Free Spirit tent (I think it is Extreme) because it has sky lights but that tent costs $500 or so more, I think (I could be wrong).

Thanks for your help here ... it has made our decision easier. Timing is right -- we plan on ordering in the Fall so hopefully the tents with sky lights will be available.

Are you only shipping these out of Utah, or are they available for pickup in Santa Cruz? Thanks.

Going up to Tahoe for the weekend and all the campsites are pretty much full. Does anyone know of any good spots to set up for the weekend that don't require a reservation?

    ...too much shit to list.
Memorial Day is booked a year in advanced. You'll never get a reservation last minute.
That said, the Tahoe Basin has really political rules when it comes to campfires. No campfires are allowed anywhere in the basin year round except established campgrounds (meaning paid campgrounds) that have designated fire rings. There are plenty of undeveloped places to camp on some of the local trails, but it's a $500 fine for any open campfires or bbqs (and USFS and LTBMU are in full effect holidays). Gas and propane stoves are allowed so long as you have a 2016 campfire permit.
