USMC, was at NAS Millington just outside of Memphis, TN before it got downgraded to an NSA. It now houses the Bureau of Naval Personnel. I have been out since 1994 and now have 8yrs with the local PD.

    Hey All,

I just read this entire thread, all 18 pages. Just wanted to say:

Thank you to all of you who serve and have served our country.

My son is interested in the AF, he's a junior in HS. Great kid, clean, never smoked or drank a drop. 6'2" 185 lbs smart as hell.

Should we go talk to a recruiter? I've heard bad things about recruiters (sorry if there's any on here). Any advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ray

atc air force. love it and at reenlistment 90k tax free if i can get it signed in the desert.
6month deployments are the reason that i went for AF and not the Army. 12-18months and then the stop-loss stuff no thanks.

but thank you for all your service in any branch.
their should be a civilian DOD option in the poll

If he is interested in the reserves I would suggest the Air National Guard. It is an Air Force aux in a way yet you serve your community and state first and foremost...well when we don't have two wars going on. The Air Guard is more like a family. Both my parents served as career officers with the California Air Guard. They never regretted it. Provided some nice bene's in later years too.

I would talk with recruiters from both the AF and the ANG. Be warned that recruiters promise the world. You don't have a choice other than talking with a recruiter if he wants to join a military branch...just take what they say with a grain of salt.

Marine Corps: 1974 - 1987. Medically retired due to complications of wounds incurred my first year. (Scar tissue doesn't cooperate during PFTs!) Went to grad school hoping to go back in with a doc at some obscene paygrade, but met and married a Vermonter instead. Turned that woman from a shy little thing into an OUTSTANDING shotgunner who now prunes her fruit trees with a 12ga!

Semper fi to all my brothers and sisters!

ditto^^ i was AD AF and now ANG and i love it. hopefully taking my AFOQT next month and will finish my degree this year. just make sure that he only signs for what he wants. if he goes guard or reserves, he can go to basic over his summer break before his senior year and go to drills all year while still in school, from what i can remember. if he has any job related or AD AF/ANG questions, shoot me a PM

Now thats a sweet gig although I would probably get island fever.
Chinaman's hat! My friend lives just north of there at Kaaawa. Good times.
Guess your deployment flights are shorter than other air guard units.

Yeah, it's not really home for me though because I grew up on the big island and did a couple of years of active duty in Okinawa.(all islands, how does that work?) As far as deployments go, we're global.

Anyway, were you ever stationed at K-bay?
    Kaaaaawa...LOL,

Nope never at K-bay, only in SoCal. Everyone is global these days. The CalANG has state firefighting duties other than supporting the regular AF needs/missions. What does the HI-ANG do? Anything different than other ANG units?
    You got it made man!

Quick question, on the C-17, whats y'alls maximum gross weight? I'm a load on a C-130, so just want a little comparison!
