IMG_20160829_143608.jpg IMG_20160821_114311.jpg I hate when oil and water mix like this.:annoyed: the truck had thrown a p0306 a couple times along with rough idle when starting.
Was driving back from the cape a couple weeks ago, towing a boat. Pulled over to fix the cover on the boat and when I got back into the truck, the scan gauge was reading 240+°! Needless to say I freaked. Coasting in neutral, i'd rev the engine and the temp would drop. The kids were less than pleased with me turning the AC off and the heat on. Every little bit helps, lol. Anyways, replaced the water pump, which had a big pink snot hanging around the weep hole and thermostat. Wasn't expecting the pink snot, I was expecting to see a pretty much bladeless water pump. To my chagrin, the old pump blades looked as good as the new. The rough idle when starting, started the next morning. Changed the plugs, no joy. Same with swapping coils.

Do both head gaskets or just the one? Timing chain obviously, tensioners reusable? Head bolts reusable or are they stretched to the proper torque?

Definitely do both sides. FSM should tell you if the head bolts are one-use or can be reused. Tensioners I would run until they failed - unless FSM said otherwise.

Don't foampile the job  - follow the manual, not your wallet.

Yup, thinking nows the time to get the fsm.

This couldn't have happened at a better time. The long weekend and I need to help someone a two bedroom apartment pretty much into storage.

Well, it's confirmed. The number six plug was wet and that cylinder barely crested 120 psi while the others, 140-150. I'm leaning towards a long block. Used with over 100k for almost 3 grand. Wtf is that?

The cylinder head bolts are reusable AS LONG AS they are measured to be withing specification:

    From the Tacoma Service Manual:

    1. INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD SET BOLT

    (a) Using vernier calipers, measure the outside diameter of the bolt thread.

Standard outside diameter: 10.85 to 11.00 mm (0.4272 to 0.4331 in.)

Minimum outside diameter: 10.7 mm (0.421 in.)

IF they are measured smaller than 10.7 mm (0.421 in.) they should be replaced.

In my opinion the peace of mind would be worth the cost of new replacement head bolts

So, I'm having a mechanic do a swap. He found an 07 with 59k miles for $2900. from a rear ended total. Hopefully I'll have it back by the end of the week. I would rather do a long block, can't swing that right now tho.

I have seen a thread relating to the timing cover leak behind the ps pump. I can't find it. Wtf... It had a pic highlighting the area that needed as some black rtv to seal the leak that was due to a casting defect iirc. Does this ring a bell with anyone? If so, can you reply with a link?

The motors coming tomorrow and I think this mechanic runs on cocaine and caffeine. Lol. I'd like to get this taken care of before the motor goes in.

Not sure of the thread but I can take a picture of my "fix" if you want. It's basically the side of the timing cover/engine block mating faces above the PS pump and as far down as you can get from there. Easier that pulling the timing cover but if you (or your mechanic) can pull it off right now and seal it, then grind a bit off the bolt holes it'll make it that much better in the long run.

Good long with the swap too. Shitty to hear.

Goobered on and holding strong! Ideally you'd like to remove the whole cover so you don't have to do this but meh.

    That works.

If I had the time and money I'd have the other cover pulled and given to my machinist friend to mill that face flat. But, I don't and I'm borrowing 3 different cars to get around. Lol. I need to get this done.

    Ditto on the confusion factor.

Why not just fix the bad gasket?
