Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

I have looked at 3 different video and have three different ways to mount the cover using three different ways utilizing the seal...¾" seal, ¼" seal and no seal.....Very confusing I agree

 

The good thing is that the MX4 locks and with or without the tailgate up or down....I am sure with more pressure, they may have some sort of is or design change

 

I used the front stripping along the front rail and currently have no issues there. All the leaks I see are from the seals on the rails. I owned a Bak on my old Tacoma and it never leaked like this.

 

Installed on Saturday. Paid $939 only because I was able to pick it up same day from 4 Wheel Parts in Compton. Only real issue I had was the last part with the knobs that clamped on the metal plate and held down the very front flap. I had to have someone push down from the top so I could get the screws low enough to get any bite. Not sure if this was something I caused but after that it all fit snug. I still need to drill holes for the drain tubes

 

Did your elevator bolts go straight down into the holes or were they going in at an angle? A new cover and I had to have someone hold down the top while I pushed up to get any bite on the bolts...Very difficult.....If at an angle, the rubber washer and flat steel washer may end up moving and go into the oval hole....not good.....stress could snap the bolts.....

 

All my bolts went in smooth. Wasn't in a bind at all.

 

Thank you......at least I know something is wrong with my setup....Cant figure it out....that why they have agreed to a whole new complete system......rails, seals and cover.....Great customer service from the selling company and the manufacturer...What more can you ask.....They are trying to get it right for me and everyone in the future

 

Unfortunately mine is leaking from the sides as well. Front corners, too, even though I did the black RTV mod in this thread.

 

Is the leaking through the seals in the cover, or along the rails where they sit on the plastic bed caps? It seems to me that if the seals in the cover are leaking, thats a manufacturing issue.

 

From what I observed, they definitely need to step their game up, better QC, and at least provide decent instructions.

 

I might be the lucky one but mine only leaks a few drops at the tailgate. I have used silicone on the front bed corners. I used the 3/4 weather striping to seal the tailgate corners.

 

The bolts did go straight down. It was the plate on the rails that seems to be off, angled down a little bit. Maybe I tightened down the rail at an angle. I will be going over it again to day and see if there is anything I need to do differently.

I am getting a completely new system...BakFlip has been great with my problems and issues....they know there is a design issue in the side rails not keeping water out...Also, there maybe water intrusion on/around the panel folds when you raise and fold them back.....The cover really looks great but.......

with your pictures, they show an obvious distance and bend from the cover....this when tightened up, will really put pressure on the rail flap and maybe one issue of the leaking problem....I believe the hole for the elevator bolts should be 9/16" dia and closer to the bed, thus relieving more pressure on the flap.....the bolt should also be ¼" longer.....the gap in the flap is bigger to allow easier inserting....Just my 2-cents.....I ope the new system works...I would hate to have to get the $1495 OEM cover....I like this one because it allows you to fold all the way back to the cab window giving you more access to bed.

 

I may take it to 4 wheel parts where I bought it and see what they say and even call Bakflip. Worst case is I'll get the rails replaced because like you say and I feel that gap is not normal

 

Anyone install the mx4 recently? Have they resolved any of the siderail leaking issues? Did you use the front seal or not?

 

They sent me a brand new system...Did not use the ¼" front seal........after install, went to car wash....Side rail leaked badly, and had small water dripping from front......took side rails off and used Black RTV and sealed all the way down and the top corners.....The real test came when we had a full day of gentle rain in Southern California....the side rail were ok, but the front corners still were leaking little but but seemed to get better some how....I am going to take the cover off and put the smaller seal (red) one the front..The ¼" seems to be too high.....

This is a great looking cover.but they, in my opinion, have not get the fix yet for the 2016 Tacoma.....If you don't plan on taking the cover "on & off" and use ATV, it will be great.....I do not plan on taking on & off....but if I do, i will use RTV at the front corners.....

 

Can you post a picture of the placement of the ¼" seal on the tailgate?

We both have the same issues. I did my original installation on August 22, 2016 having received the new 2016 Tacoma a month earlier. The rain never came until almost two weeks later and did it leak through the rail system. Yes, I live in the NW of British Columbia which is rain forest territory!

I contacted BAK Industries who had me send images and post a short video of my problems. It appears that the problem originates with how the rails are installed. They must be perfectly at 90 degrees when you look from the rear. I am a fraction off, possibly 92 degrees or greater. BAK Industries have requested I do a complete re-installation which I will do in two weeks when our son arrives for Canadian Thanksgiving.

BAK Industries have been very kind and have sent some additional parts plus replacement parts. We are going to place shims on the inside as support for the side rails so that we obtain a perfect 90 degrees fit. How they sit on - much like a clip-on method will give you this. I also received a 1/8 inch Bulkhead Seal with the original shipment - not the normal Bulkhead seal that isn't used on a Tacoma and plan to install this as well on the bulkhead. There is a YouTube Tacoma video where the good folk have installed this thin seal. I am also replacing the two end bulkhead seals as I used black silicone and it has messed up where I pulled it off.

I hope that this will resolve my leak issues. BAK Industries have asked to report back to them if I still have leak issues after the re-installation.
