Did a quick search and didn't find this covered already. Sorry if it's a double-tap.

I've been reading this site for sometime before I bought my Tacoma. I read a few threads that mentioned getting a copy made of the tailgate key.

When I picked up my 2017 I asked the salesman to include a spare of the tailgate key. He said the keyfob ignition key (automatic, push start FYI) would work on the tailgate. So we tested and both keyfob keys work even though they are smaller than the single tailgate key provided. So, truck basically comes with 3 tailgate keys.

Just FYI if this hasn't been covered in previous threads.

I don't believe they put an actuator in the tailgate yet, just all the lock cylinders are the same now. Before the tailgate had its own separate key, and you only got one I believe

That would require power tailgate lock. OP is talking about the emergency key built into the fob.

yea, the salesman when i picked mine up said the key was different. get home, and i realize its the same key for 2017.

not a huge issue, but that was something that really bothered me about the 2016, how they thought that could be ok to have a different key for the tailgate.

It's only cut on one side, so it has to be inserted only one way. Try it again. If it's a 2017 it should be the same

Highly recommend just installing the Pop-N-Lock tailgate actuator. Got mine on Amazon for $90, took about 1.5 hrs to install cleanly. Site says it doesn't fit the 16+ Tacoma, but it does. Even the packaging now states 2016 Tacoma (add-on sticker from the MFG). Best protection from tailgate/cargo theft you can get.

The key in my fob works the tailgate lock just fine. As @Lawfarin mentions, you do have to put it in the correct way.

I never have to use it though, I ordered my truck with the tailgate power lock pre-installed.

It is an option in Southeast Toyota territory, I don't know about availability in other regions. I paid invoice of $174.90, MSRP is $259.

no, but the little key that is inside the keyfob for the 2017s works for the tailgate too.

For 2016 it was only for drivers door and then separate key for tailgate. Toyota smartened up

I open my tailgate with the same key I turn on the engine on my truck. It's a 2017.
