I've driven thru some dirt roads in the pine barrens but never really hit any trails. I'd be down for a trip but am also filled all of sept. Next planned wheeling trip after Tennessee this weekend is toys for tots turkey trot Black Friday weekend

I'd like to finally wheel, but instead of fixing my 4x4, I did a ton of maintenance on my truck recently. So I'd either have to get my ass in gear and fix that shit soon, go full gimp 2wd and hope I don't hold anyone back, or go as a copilot with someone so I at least experience it in some way.

Yeah with zero experience, I wouldn't be too keen on putting my truck at risk by taking it out for fun in 2wd.
Well I've got to get the part first. No. Well yes. But technically, I have to verify what is wrong. Although I am nearly certain.

I may do this if it'd be no issue. I'll have to find out when y'all would be looking to do something. Getting off work is a pain with how far ahead I have to request off. But I do work overnights, so it's a bit easier to swing a day excursion even without having off.

All signs point to ADD actuator. But I have yet to truly verify this.

I have their sliders already. I am waiting for RCI to have a sale, so I can complete my skids. I sold my Pelfrey standard rear bumper with swingout, and am delivering it to the buyer in Saranac Lake, NY. I am just offering my services if anyone needs anything from my area (near DC)

If you want, I could give you a lengthy description of all the little details about the situation. It's strange and I don't know exactly what to make of it. It seems not mechanical. My issue seems electronic.

Okay so basically here is what is going on.

First and foremost, when I press the 4WD button, I do not engage. Obviously.
The 4x4 light does not come one on...usually. And when it does, it means nothing. Nothing is happening at any point in the system, to my knowledge.
Almost half the time when I turn the key over, the 4x4 light comes on, but again means nothing. If I turn the key back off and on and again, it goes away.
Under no circumstances can I engage 4WD.
I can, however, put the transfer case in Lo and utilize low gearing while in 2WD, so at least I have that. Also, I can use my rear locker while in Lo gearing. The grey wire mod to enable 2WD locker has not been done.
If I disconnect the power plug on the t-case actuator, the 4x4 light comes on and blinks, indicating an issue.
If I disconnect the plug on the ADD actuator, the light does not come on. And the interesting part is that once this plug is disconnected, my 4WD button works. The t-case actuator operates on and off. Obviously, still no 4x4, since the ADD is disconnected, but the t-case actuator works now.

I did take it for diagnosis to a nearby dealership. But I am an idiot for doing so. I know this location is shit. They took it out for 20 minutes and told me my t-case actuator needs to be replaced. And the kicker is they quoted me $1200 for the part and $900 for labor lmao. Nty. At least they never charged me for the diagnosis. But I think they just forgot to.

Through my testing and in my ignorance, I don't see the t-case actuator being the issue here, since I can get it to operate and the system detects an issue with it disconnected. The ADD one, however, triggers no issue and appears to be disrupting the t-case actuator operation. I don't know if there is a system of checks that has the ADD one first and will not let the signal proceed to the t-case one if there is an issue, but if that would be the case then a busted ADD actuator would make sense.

But really, I have no idea what I am talking about. Any help is greatly appreciated. At this point, I am about to replace the ADD actuator and hope for the best.

Wiring issue was my initial thought, since the issue seems to be electrical. But even looking at the wiring diagrams, I don't get it. I am an idiot with this stuff, especially electrical. I know close to zero. And having a ground-triggered system confuses me even more.

I did test the plugs for both actuators and they appeared to be fine. This is why I went to thinking the actuator itself and not wiring. I could have tested wrong, but I'd at least like to imagine I did it right.

Yeah that was my plan. I figured even if it isn't the issue, it is 12 years old and may very well need replacing at some point in the near future. And since I know a guy who should be able to get OEM Toyota parts at cost + 10%, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Depending where you're going, 2wd with a locker can be enough. I ran blues at rausch while my add actuator was fucked up.

    End of sept/beginning of October

Anthony and I have both replaced the add actuators in our trucks. I think he's done it twice now. I can't speak for the 1st gens, but in 2nd gens it is a weak link for sure. You could always open up the actuator and take a look at it. Ours were pretty obviously destroyed. Inspect the breather and vent line and make sure they are intact. Toyota spent over $10k on my lemon law case because their mechanic failed to notice my vent line had a slice in it. $2 rubber hose... Lol

It's the actuator. Ant's got spare now that he's gone to the FJ front ADD delete.
