Reversing in 4 wheel drive

    I noticed a foul smell when reversing in 4x4. It smelled like clutch but I wasn't burning the clutch. Another time I was backing into a small forest service road and had the wheel turned and smoke came out and the vehicle didn't move.

    Should I not be using reverse in 4x4? What do you think is burning? The front diff?

    Are you on pavement? You should never use 4wd on a non-slip surface, the tires need to spin at differing speeds if they cannot slip this means either you will get wheel hop or damage to your driveline. 4x4 should be used off-road only, or in low traction conditions like snow/ice.

    Check that grease from the driveshaft zerks has not been cast onto the exhaust , I had a similar smell and thats what it turned out to be

    It's really easy to heat up the clutch in 4 high. I've smoked the shit out of mine a couple times when the truck wouldn't go into 4 low. Once just turning around when offroading, the other just recently when I had backed my trailer down a grassy hill and needed to get back up. I tried numerous times to get it into 4 low first then just gave her hell. Nothing but smoke and smell. Went right into 4 low after that :annoyed: I've also heated it up to the point where it smelled but there was no smoke many times.

    How hard did you have the wheel turned? If you have it cranked too much while in 4wd your going to bind things up... might be why the truck wouldn't move.

    I always hear use 4 lo when reversing with a manual trans, reverse gear is too high.

    My truck is a fat pig with big heavy tires and that fucking reverse gear is too tall.

    Nope I was on loose dirt and gravel on a forest service road.

    I shall do that. I just greased them up before this trip so I would imagine some got thrown around. I can't imagine it only doing that in reverse though?

    This is probably what is happening.

    This was probably the reason it didn't move and just burned the clutch that one time. I think I turned it pretty hard.

    This paragraph might be what happened...
    "When starting from a standstill with sharply turned wheels: The need for higher rpm in the front will most likely prevent you from getting started at all. If you step on the gas really hard (plus slipping your clutch) you might get the vehicle moving with spinning rear wheels but stress on all driveline components will be dangerously high. Chance is that you will break something."
    This is especially true on pavement but even when off road it's best not to make sharp turns in 4WD...

    Unless your in a situation where you need 4wd, switching to 2wd makes those tight turns a lot easier. It seems to me the turning radius is also increased in 4wd, but it may just be how the truck handles.
