So this "friend" of my wife and I has apparantly gave our name and number to a financial planner that may or may not be his personal planner. The "friend" is a bank manager (we have no business relationship) and is not a best friend, but I have known him for over 20 years and we get together maybe 6-8 times a year. Anyway the planner calls up my wife at work today, which really pissed her off, and I don't know how he got her direct line...my friend didn't even have it, or so we thought. I don't know if he thought maybe we needed some guidance or if he felt we are doing well for ourselves and was just trying to "help out". It kinda ticks me off though because he didn't ask if it was ok or not nor did he warn me that the guy may be contacting us. How do you guys feel about something like this? Have you been a victim or done this to someone? How would you react? I want to subscribe him to something or give his name to a company....maybe to someone selling annuities. If you were at home one evening having dinner when the phone rings and the guy on the line is selling something and tells you that your friend gave him your name and number how would you feel? How should I let him know that I don't care for this without making a huge deal out of it or ruining a friendship? Would you just let it go?

Maybe he had good intentions. I say let it go. Everybody is trying to earn a buck. Sometimes sales make you do aggressive things to get paid. I say no thanks, not interested and good bye. If he calls back again, then its time to throw down.

I dunno man, it sounds like an issue to be between husband and wife and not a third party. I would submit his name to timeshare companies. He should have talked to you before just passing on your information.

The solution is simple. Talk to your friend either on the phone or face to face. And simply state that you value your privacy and you don't approve of him giving out your personal information ever. Thank him for his good intentions and say good bye.

Coolest revenge I pulled was paging a lady that I work with, with McDonald's phone number while we were sitting in McDonald's... Hilarious and oh soooo sweeeet... Everybody with us knew what was going on except her.

You have to say something to him, if you dont you have no right to be pissed off. Tell him in a nice way you don't like to have your personal info given out w/o asking first. If he is reasonable he will say sorry & that will be the end of it, if it ever hapens again I say sign him up for everything you can think of.:)

So he is more than an acquaintance. You see him socially?? six to 8 times a year. Give him a break. That makes him a friend of sorts.
You may have or have not mentioned something that led him to believe you have been looking for some assistance. He may or may not have been well intentioned.
Speak to him about giving out your personal information, not flame him. Ask him to consult you for your opinion in the future and to respect your privacy. You might want to cultivate him sometime in the future.

Besides, you only sign your friends up for gay travel for fun not because your pissed at them... Oh, and never fess up... Always keeps them wondering..

i'd just let it go. it might have been one of those things where they ask for like 5 or 10 'friends' phone numbers that they think could benefit from that program. he might have just been trying to help out.

I am in a similar situation except my cousin who is fresh out of college and working for a financial planner keeps calling me. At first I figured I might as well hear what he has to say. He did give me some helpful information but the call turned into an hour long call with another hour long follow up call a week later.

I don't mind talking to my cousin but when it comes down to it, he is just another solicitor pushing insurance. If it were anyone else I would have no problem hanging up but I'm not sure how to tell him I'm not interested without being a bitch.

    Any ideas?

:annoyed: I would be pissed! I would give his name to a life insurance and a mortuary facility, claiming that he is very interested.
That should catch his attention.

i'm not sure why this is a big deal. did this inconvenience you in any way other than having to tell the planner you're not interested? i could understand if he sold your info to a telemarketing company but this just doesn't seem like a big deal at all to me. def not worth any retaliation
