As a follow-up to my previous post, I'm now towing with a Ram 1500 5.7L with 3.92 gears. I miss the Tacoma but this is a much better truck for us on the road.

My 2 cents is you made a wise decision and I wish you the best of luck with your new Dodge truck and TT towing experiences. I believe most of our new Tacoma are rated to pull 6400 lbs. if I remember right? That being so there is no way in hell I'd pull that much weight much less the 5500 lbs your were pulling. I'm shooting for a travel trailer at half or less of the towing capacity and with that using both weight distribution and anti sway bars. If by chance I don't feel the confident after I buy a TT with towing it with my Tacco then I'll be looking at buying another truck like you have. Again best of luck on the new Dodge, your rig and truck look great!

Notice you have the trailer support down still. Every Ram 1500 I see (without rear supports) has major lean. That rear suspension is horrible for towing. The Tacoma handles hitch weight way better than the Ram 1500 in factory form. I am in no way bashing the Ram and it was between the EcoD and Tacoma for me. Price was the ultimate factor and of course the sad rear suspension

No, I hadn't hitched the truck up to the trailer for that picture. I did install a pair of Firestone work-rite helpers in the rear, similar to the Sumo springs I had in the Tacoma. With the WD hitch adjusted, the drop at the receiver is 1-1.5".

Did you tow with the 16's at 4300 lbs? Wondering what the difference was if any in comparison to the 17's.

I am wondering what the tongue weight of your setup is?

Found this thread after I was done towing, but I will get some pics of the trailer contents. I recently towed a 6'x10' single axle enclosed trailer from Whidbey Island to Pasco. The trailer had a heavy 8' work bench, drill press, scrap wood, bed frame, and various other tools. Oh, it also had a few cinder blocks and a bucket of lead. The bed was packed with a lawn mower, compound miter saw, and shop vac. The back seat was home to even more tools, hardware galore, and other random things. Amazingly enough, Taco only squat about 8 inches. Oh, and just in case you couldn't tell, I'm in the process of moving. The flat ground towing wasn't bad, and I just barely made it past the Seattle rush hour traffic, but the tricky part was the mountains. Going East, the I-90 is a bit steeper than it is coming from the other side. When I'm not towing, I usually cruise along at 80mph, but because of the weight (and rain), I stayed at 60-65 most of the way, hitting 70 near Yakima. I kept her in 4th most of the way, 5th on flat areas, and only put it in 6th on the downhills (Yes, I have the 6spd). This kept my RPM in the neighborhood of 3-3.5k and I averaged 12.7 mpg and had to refill once. I have been running 89 octane for a few tanks now.

About a month ago, I also used Taco to haul some dirt. I had a half-yard of damp soil in the bed. She was definitely doing squats, but she made it up the hill to my house and in 4H, was able to maneuver around my yard as well.

All in all, not bad for a little V6 with an off road package!

    **EDIT**
I just got done pulling the same trailer back to whidbey, except this time it was empty and I averaged between 60 and 70mph. overall mileage? 12.6 mpg. Seems like the weight didn't mean much to the Angry Taco, just the wind resistance :)

Also, here are the pics from the loaded trailer:
    0902160911.jpg 0902160912.jpg 0902160912a.jpg

I'm glad I found this thread, because I had some questions that I will also post in the mods thread...
Obviously increased elevation means thinner air, which means less power. I know y'all have felt it when going over the mountains. So other than the obvious forced induction, what are some other effective ways to increase power at altitude?

I have had my eye on a CryO2 system for a while and was wondering if anyone had experience with it? Other ideas? Gonna pose this question in the mods forum too.

    Keep on truckin!

I bought a tongue weight scale because the manufacturer didn't have any reliable info for this trailer. With full propane tanks but nothing else loaded (no water in tanks, no gear inside) the TW is 780 pounds! I actually had to put water in the rear holding tank to lighten the front end when I was pulling it behind the Tacoma.

Wow. Thats way more than I expected. I tow a small 5x8 trailer with about a 500lb tongue weight. Using the Andersen WDH also, it really helps a lot.

Hey guys does anyone have any feedback or pictures on towing a camper with also so weight in the bed (atv, gear, etc). Really trying to decide on a truck here and its killing my brain if I should get a Tundra or another Tacoma to tow out 3000lb camper + 780 lb atv in bed. The numbers work out that it should be possible but I know how numbers can be fudged a lot by manufactures

How often you going to tow that. That would be a lot of tongue weight.

Only 2-3 times a year, but the camper alone about 20. I think you mean payload too right? I never tried it with my new camper, just my older 1500 pop up. The 2.7 pulled that like a champ too
Edit nevermind I understand what your saying now

I pull 4300 around no sweat.
    Nothing in bed.
5000 is not an issue either.
