I'm looking at a 2012 Tacoma with 153,000 miles on it. (This is at a dealer) It's been wrecked, the dealership has to do a safety inspection, replace the front bumper and some body work. Maybe some other work too, but hopefully the frame is fine. The left door creaks just a tiny bit. It's been driven 37,411 miles a year. I test drove it and it seems fine, doesn't drift, brakes, turns and accelerates normally.

It's obviously been driven pretty hard and beat up. They're first asking $19,000 (before they've worked on it). Obviously I'm not going to pay that much but what are you guys's opinions? It this a time bomb and should I leave it alone? Or should I get it and at what price do I talk them down too? I'll post the CARFAX/AUTOCHECK on here.

    I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

    Thanks,

    Dave
(Ps- I'm buying a taco to overland it)

An overland build to me equals reliability first and foremost. This isn't the foundation you want to build on.

I don't even know why you'd consider such a high mileage wrecked vehicle. Even if they don't "find" anything on inspection, what happens when your out in the boonies and something they missed goes wrong?

I would stay away, even if you plan to overland it. You can find a much nicer truck for the same price. Best of luck in your search.

Thanks for the feedback. But what if I could talk them down to 10k? Still no?

You say it has been wrecked--the Carfax does not show that.

I would avoid it; however it might be a reasonable buy at the right price.

Alright I'm gonna stay away, I'll keep looking. Appreciate the feedback, I'm obviously brand new to this thing but I'll learn eventually.

KEEP LOOKING !!! I'd highly advise staying away from that .. they are going to try and push it on you. You can find something better for that much money .. no matter the price STAY AWAY ! find you a truck with lower miles that has been taken care of

What is your guys's advice on the max miles and miles per year on a used tacoma for a new buyer? Keeping in mind $14,000 is my limit.

Get them around $8500 and it might be a better deal. The miles mean nothing and the body work and bumper really only mean slightly more. Car fax reports mean exactly shit.

The best investigative tool is the Toyota Owners care web site. You already know it was in an accident, so who gives a shit about that Car Fax report.

If you are just gonna cut the thing up to make it how you want it, it does make sense to start with something that needs help. Nothing more painful than cutting brand new rear fenders to increase approach angle. Not so painful if that same fender already has a dent.

If you find no issues with engine or transmission, then you have a decent vehicle to start with.

I can't blame the dealer ship for asking $19k. There are people that will pay that...I don't know why, but there are.

Like I said, some pics would be kinda cool to make a more informed post.

With the miles so high on a late model truck, they're obviously highway miles, so I wouldn't be afraid of that aspect, as long as reg maint was done (how to KNOW this is the hard part), but yeah, the price is the scary part. It would be less scary if it were priced at $10k, but as someone else pointed out, they'll likely find someone to buy it for $16k or so, so I wouldn't expect them to entertain offers much lower than that.
