I have a 06 Pre runner with 136K. I have a vibration and a humming sound coming from the front of the truck. The sound that it makes sounds very similar to knobby tires. The sound happens when the truck is moving regardless of wether Im giving it gas or not. I have lifted the truck off the ground to check for any play in the wheels or weird sounds thinking it may be the wheel bearings but there is none. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be. How else do can i check to see if the bearings are going bad?

Did you remove the tire and brakes? Sometimes you can't tell it the bearing is bad with them on when you check it.

With mine, the sound changed when turned, going around a sharp corner. I'd just do both sides, from what I've read it's extremely common for the 2nd gen and most I've read had to be replaced before 100k so yours are overdue.

I drove mine at least 1000 miles on the bad bearings, I was on my way down to md from ma when I noticed it. It's really amazing how quiet it is when the bearings are good and fixed.

Had both fronts done last week after a summer of listening to them whine.
Mine started out low sound on the drivers front just when I turned right, turning left made it go away.
Then it was a steady groan on drivers side except when turning left.
Eventually it was steady no matter what, and the pass side started when it was turned right.

    Now it's all quite.

On a pre-runner, that's pretty much it in the front end that can cause that sound.

No. It should be fairly smooth....like you're turning a steering wheel. Do you feel any hesitation? Turn it really slow both directions

Have you ever had to replace wheel bearings? If so did you do it your self or take it to a mechanic?

I've done them on an 05 4x4. It's not hard to do if you get a pre-assembled hub.

No, this was long before they were offered by Bama.

I replaced both of mine on my 4x4 In the last month, which I assume is harder than the prerunner since the axle goes through the hub. If you have the tools, it should not be too difficult. Ask a friend to help if you need, but basically you will unbolt the 4 bolts holding the hub on and swap it with the new one.

    I got mine from https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-complete-save-custom-built-available.288055/
