Just bought a 2004 well modified 4x4. Private seller, nice guy. Long story short, aftermarket cats are not legal. In fact they aren't even for the 5VZ. Smog guy sent me to a BAR referee. He said legally the seller will have to pay for replacement OEM or CARB approved cats. However I did not receive a smog certificate when I purchased the truck, so I don't know if it will hold up in court. I called Toyota and they said each cat is around $1300, and labor will be about $400. It sounds like my best bet is to try and nicely ask the seller to pay for it. Worst case scenario I don't know how my side will hold up in court. I have not yet given the release of liability to the dmv so technically he still owns the truck.

    Fuck California.
    Please help!!!

    You're fucked if you've already exchanged $$$$ w/o a smog certificate.

I have two cats from an 04 BTW.

I'd just buy the parts from the guy listed above and call it a day. Install would be easy enough.

California is a beautiful state. It's a mild temperature 9 months out of the year. That's why people live here. In a day drive I can be at the beach, then hit the sky slopes then next morning be in the high desert...
But the people here are assholes. And the tourists that visit here are assholes.

The politicians here are megalomaniacs and next year I'll have to take a background check to buy ammunition. But I hear you, that's why I'm moving to Arizona. :D

OK, Cali and their rules/wacko-ness aside.........

The real lesson learned is never to buy a vehicle in a smog state that doesn't come with both a clear title AND a current smog certificate.

Buyer beware still plays a role in life.

@brennanalc, did you resolve the issue? I was just reading this. I know the seller you bought it from, he's a really cool dude. I can't imagine he wouldn't want to make it right.
