Exactly statistics would say its quite a bit as there's a lot of owners not even on this forum, the howl often is faint and some might not even notice it, I didnt even have it till 5k miles or so and only noticed it when my phone died one day and it was quiet in the truck, so some guys might not even realize they have it.

Yes 129 said they have it, its split. Dude come on, read and look at data, I take it you aren't college educated or have ever taken a statistics class, 129 people in a thread sampling a portion of a forum that is a sampling of a base of owners extrapolated, yes it indicates its a decent sized issue. Im glad you don't have any issues or this issue, but just because you don't dosent mean other don't. Go troll somewhere else if you don't agree or want to spew off more nonsense, your in a thread discussing this issue you are so sure of no one having or very few.

Seeing that my phone is linked to my bluetooth playing music, music went silent, noticed the howl. Again did you read the rest of my post saying was silent in the truck, holy crap you must ride the short bus.

So you get a brand new redesigned diff at 36K. That would be the gold if you ask me. I would love to have a new redesigned diff in 3 years from now. Lot of worry for nothing. zero, nada.

Tacoman, I am a military guy, and I believe in freedom of speech, but I don't think you are contributing anything on this thread.

Yes I am waiting hoping they have a solution in the works, usually they do, examples like the updated leaf packs for 2nd gens, frame coating and replacement, etc.

What if all the 3rd Gen guys with problems demanded a refund and got rid of their "problem ridden vehicles"? If it's got that many problems then why are you "waiting for a solution"?

Many of us don't have "that many problems" again a bit ignorant of a response, not to mention you can't just off load a vehicle that easy or return it for a refund its not a t-shirt. Most of us have one issue or a few little ones, for me the stupid lower control arm issue I fixed with the plugs they have, no big, I really do enjoy my 16, just a howling diff, that clearly isn't normal is a bit troublesome, I'm sure you would feel the same way. Right now there is no solution, Toyota just replaces it with another diff that does the same, rumor is they are trying to address it, so I will wait for now.

I'm not trying to be "ignorant". But if I bought a vehicle brand new (or even used) of any make or model, and there were things wrong with it I felt were necessary to broadcast to the world, I would get rid of it. I don't see the justification in waiting for a solution if it is something that seriously concerns you. I understand off loading a rig isn't an instant thing. But it might be quicker than a "solution in the works". And if there are actually things wrong then the dealership has got to be able to work something out. If I go buy a BBQ and it doesn't work the way it should, I return it.

I'm not saying your truck does or doesn't have problems. What I'm wondering is, if your truck has problems that bother you, why drive it?

The howl is it, I have addressed with service advisor and waiting to schedule an appointment, but as others have proven the solution is a new diff that is the same diff. Besides that I have absolutely no issues with this truck and it fits my needs, I have owned 5 tacomas, I'm a tacoma guy and want to drive one, dosent mean a howling diff dosent concern me in regards to long term reliability, but I'm hoping Toyota will come through, I have no reason not to believe so as they stood by owners with 10 year old trucks and frame rot, etc. I'm not vocal about it, just chime in here when guys ask questions or try to say we are all making it up. Smitty is the vocal dude. lol. For me I don't have a ton of money to loss on a trade or upgrade to something else right now, so a new vehicle is not really feasible right now or smart. So for me I will wait while I have a warranty, continue to have faith in Toyota a brand I have had good relations with and a truck I really enjoy and hope a fix comes before my warranty or at that point I can trade for something else when I've established more equity, etc.

Has anyone had a diff actually fail or is it just a howling in the gears?

And +1 for wanting to drive a Tacoma. The ORIGINAL radiator just cracked and started leaking in my truck.

But my original diff is silent. :boink:

Good luck with the dealership man.

No failures, just a faint howling ghost like noise, lol, which for me I can live with for now.

    Thanks.

Yep 5th Tacoma, went full size Silverado retard briefly for 4 months, then back to a tacoma, it just fits me.
