The GM twins are already beating the new Taco in every truck shootout I've seen. The only thing Toyota excels in is the off road.

Toyota has the off-road segment nailed hands down. If that's their primary market - to appeal to the off-road crowd then they should continue to do so. However - there's sales to be had for folks who aren't interested in off-roading. I used to be...when I was younger. But now I'm old....

I jumped ship...and bought a Canyon. I personally don't care too much about the differences in gas mileage horsepower torque, bla bla bla. They're all so close, not worth comparing IMO. The GM twins (or at least the Canyon) has far more options and creature comforts than the new Tacoma. When you put out the newest-of-the-new and it doesn't even have Power seats? Really?
It was disappointing for me. If the two trucks were comparable side-by-side in options and goodies - I would've went with a Tacoma. Makes me wonder how many years it'll take before they put Power seats, rear disc brakes & black leather interior in it (or atleast as options)

I test drove both a 2015 Colorado and a 2015 Tacoma. Actually drove the Colorado at two different dealers. I chose an old, outdated and antiquated Tacoma over a GM product and have no regrets. There is nothing GM can do to win me back as a customer after having this truck.

Power seats you adjust once....for yourself and that's it...kinda pointless if you ask me.

Now my Maxima slides the seat back and lifts the steering wheel when I get out...THAT'S something to speak too, which neither of these trucks will ever do.

It's a truck. They put the tech where it belongs. In reliability.

I love seeing these threads, so much Hate for anything then the golden tacoma. Our Toyotas are not the best thing out...frames failing, vibrations, leaf spring failures, A.I.R failures to name a few and the 3rd Gen hasn't been problem free either. Toyota rolled over the 2nd Gen platform with some updates and a new drive train and called it 3rd gen. Toyota is not pushing the envelope when it comes to trucks these days..tundra is long in the tooth as well. Colorado has a diesel now, the 4 banger I think haso like 40hp more then tacomas offering. Taco does it best when it comes to offroad like said above, you cannot take away from that but it's mediocre in many other categories.

In all the reviews of the new Tacoma and all of the head to heads with the GM twins the biggest complaints are the comfort, fuel economy and lack of innovation. If they can cram a proven economical diesel into the Tacoma putting it up there in the high 20s mpg with plenty of torque they will turn some heads back their way. Add in a power seat, a more adjustable steering column, raise the roof a couple inches and update the graphics on the entune they will change alot of opinions. Keep the manual transmission and source a reliable 8 speed auto!

A couple of things I like about my 2014 Tacoma Off-Road:
    1. Simple, reliable and proven platform.
    2. Reasonably priced, so I don't feel bad using it like a truck.
    3. Decent features geared towards off-road use. They've helped get me out of tough situations.

    A couple of things I don't like about my 2014 Tacoma Off-Road:
    1. Overall, the truck is a little light-duty. Just the nature of mid-size trucks I suppose.
    2. Some fairly basic features, commonly found in most other vehicles, missing.
    3. The paint job is garbage, very thin and scratches way too easily.

What I like about emerging competition in the mid-size market:
    1. Incorporating a lot of technologies that Toyota has elected to ignore so far.
    2. Typically include features that are now standard on most modern vehicles.
    3. I feel overall build quality is better on domestic vehicles. Not the case a few years ago but they've stepped up their game.

I think Chevy has a shot at competing with Toyota in this market if they play their cards right moving forward. I think Ford will really give Toyota a run for their money when they release the new Ranger, based on some of the other vehicles Ford has put out recently. When the time comes for me to replace my Tacoma I'll be giving all options a close look, especially if Toyota decides to stick with their GEN3 Tacoma for a while...not interested.

    Just my two cents...

I've said this before, but it seems like Toyota is capitalizing on the Tacoma's past reputation (and subsequent customer loyalty) with minimal investment moving forward. That was my take-away from the "GEN3" anyways. If this is the case, we'll see more of the mid-size truck sales go to their competition and hopefully that encourages them to step up their game.

I respect the fact that GM is pushing the envelope with available options and available engines. It is giving the Gen 3 Tacoma a run for its money. Would there be a Gen 3 without the twins reintroduction into the segment? That being said it shows how bad GM has mismanaged the marketing of certain models over the years. They have had several models of cars and trucks that are better on paper and expert reviews/testing that don't sell as as well as other brands. It appears to me that GM has tarnished its reputation to the point that consumers don't give them a chance. They have a long road ahead to repair consumer confidence and relation damage built up over the years.

I'm sure some people would complain if they changed the tacoma too much

I welcome all the competition coming. I don't plan on trading out any time soon, but competition really makes everyone step up their game. The better half bought a low end RAV4 same model year as my truck. It has so many more niceties standard for one reason, competition is stiff in the small crossover market. My truck is so base for one reason, almost no competition in the small truck market. As a consumer I welcome competitive markets.

The thing about a GM product--you can put a nice engine and drivetrain in one, but the interior will be falling apart by 100K regardless. GM has a long term philosopy about their vehicles in terms of parts spec: good enough is good enough.

They burned their bridges with me decades ago (I owned a Chevy Monza 4.3 liter v8. Nuff said)

But it is the car market. Always new buyers coming in, some that they haven't had a chance to burn yet.

As a guy who came over the fence from GM to Toyota and bought a new Taco a few years ago...I know exactly what he's talking about.
