powdercoated wheel durability

I have searched the threads about having wheels powdercoated but haven't found much on the durability of this process. Do they scratch easily? Can you pressure wash them? Can you get black wheel weights and do they scratch the wheel or do you have to use the stick on weights? Are they prone to scratch when tires are mounted? Also can you powdercoat the plastic centers or do you have to paint them? I assume the lug nuts can be powder coated as well. Can someone who has had their wheels powdercoated for a year or more let us know how it is holding up? Thanks for any info you can give.

 

I haven't powder coated mine yet but plan to when tires need changed, from what I have read on here you can get your weights mounted on the inside of rim, the centers would have to be painted & as far as pressure washing I dont see why not I have always pressure washed my quads/Dirt bikes and those frames are powdercoated. Mounting after PC shouldn't be an issue many custom bikes have PC wheels you just have to take extra care when mounting tires. I hope someone on her who has PC'd their wheels chimes in, I really want to do this myself and I am interested in durability too. I want to do my skidplate and nerf bars the same color all black, more nervous about the nerf bars than anything they catch alot of rocks.

Local shop that does the work is telling me 70.00 per wheel and that includes stripping them down to bare metal. They will only guarantee their work if they strip the wheels themselves. Pretty good price imo.

 

rattle can.cheap and easy touch up.save the rest of your $$ for another mod.jmo.

The PC should be very durable for normal driving and even light offroading (light...)

If you plan on taking your truck offroad near rocks or anything else that's hard enough to scratch, I'd suggest rattle canning them instead as touch ups would be much easier.

i have powder coated wheels as well, no problems with durability. No scratches. Holding up just fine. If i had to do it again i might just save myself some money and rattle can though.

 

Powdercoating is a waste of time and money if your going to offroad...cause your bound to scratch and if you rattle can them and scrath your wheels then you can just resand and rattle can again! Cheap and easy!

I know this is a stupid question but when you say rattle can are you just referring to spray painting them? Would that actually work on the sport alloys? I'm not concerned about durability of PC but would love to save money where I can. Thanks!

 

Powdercoating is the way to go. They are MUCH more durable and will resist scratches and even chips. If you're going to rattle can your rims, then you will constantly be doing it because it will chip/scratch very easily.

To powdercoat a wheel, they will sand blast your wheel, electrically charge the wheel and spray a powder all over it. The powder sticks to the wheel because it reacts to the charge. Its then baked for a certain amount of time which then bonds the powder to the metal. Once its powdercoated, you can practically take a hammer to the surface and it wont scratch all the way through. Most places (where I'm at in CA) will do it for $50 per wheel.

As far as the center caps go, you will need to rattle can them to match. Powdercoated plastic is actually possible, but few shops actually do it.

Unless you know what you're doing (from a professional standpoint) and are painting something that will see little/no physical abuse.

Nothing good comes cheap and easy....and bodywork/paintwork is far from any sort of exception!
Anything done cheap and easy will only look and last cheap and easy....especially in the hands of anyone with zero experience in prepping/painting etc.
A guy will do a half assed job of prepping and shooting $2 spraypaint on a set of wheels for a nice truck, and his friend will come and ask "where'd you get the cheap ass wheels from?"
