This. I must have messaged toyota numerous times about the transmission problem that I noticed just from test driving.
They always said no it is perfectly fine, but then issue a change for programming. Clearly they notice all the complaints and negative press.

I'm curious how many Canadian models are experiencing all these problems?
I know this site is mainly american but I'm just wondering what the canadian models are like. Our road standards are obviously different from some of the states so I'm just thinking they might be built a little different to meet our regulations?

But are the canadians holding up better than the US?
I'm likely placing an order soo and this thread is really making me worried about getting a 2017 DCOR now.
Especially since I'll be doing a lift and such so I'm worried toyota will try and use that as an excuse as to a howling diff etc and then not warranty it when and if they ever fix it.

If the trucks are being built in the same factory (Texas/Mexico) you should see the same issues, their end destination won't effect or prevent said issues.

Thats every auto manufacturer. Toyota won't do anything for YOU on Twitter or Facebook. They will direct you to their customer care center. Its highly unlikely that they will start a case number becaue of a post on social media. This is why it's of absolute importance to start with the proper channels. All of these companies understand that they will see more bitching on social media than anywhere else.

Is this differential problem something that would be solved by changing the internals with something else?

Would an arb locker and regear solve the issues? I get many won't want to go that route but I'm planning on doing an arb anyways

I am going to speak to the service manager on Tuesday to see what the ETA is on the FTS to check out my truck. Otherwise besides that, please continue to call Toyota corporate if you haven't already to continue talking about the problems on this truck! We need everyone's support on this otherwise the 3rd gen very well may be the turd gen!

Come on, mostly minor stuff and well documented in which they are aware and probably working on fixes. Embarrased to drive, sell the truck then. Want compensation, don't be one of those people that are part of what is wrong with america. Safety hazzard

A few things were fixed easy, take pride in doing that. Others will be addressed. The transmission is tuned for mpg and the engine is peakier, it is going to shift and drive like that and you knew that going in if you did any homework. Grow up and have it fixed as it can, no need for a big thread reaching for a pity party...

Maybe a little older, mine was a 1960 Belair 283 with a cast iron 2 speed. Really they should shift around 25 - 30 mph. That combo could move those big ol boats right along.

Is this something that would be fixed with new internals? Line if you swapped an arb locker and new gears? I'm just thinking not a fix for others but something I'm planning on doing anyways so would be less of a worry

Would be nice to know what is causing the noise... pinion gear, carrier bearings or what??? Can't know what the fix is if you don't know what the cause is. My old S10 howls like a wolf at 45 with only 125k on it. Been told it's the carrier bearings and a common issue with this truck, could go another 200k like this. Not for me... I hope my 2017 Tacoma is one with the "quiet" rear end because I'm getting too old for loud music.

excessive backlash is my hunch, based on the way everyone describes the noise. Either that or the cut on one of the gear is just a hair off.

That's why I'm wondering if changing the diff for an arb would solve it. I'm hoping I won't have the howling issue. But if I do I'm planning on arb locker anyways so if that would be a fix that's fine

the actual diff mechanism shouldn't be moving in a straight line. I'm referring to ring and pinion back lash

I haven't experienced this howling that's why I'm not sure. What's causing it.

But is it just an annoying sound or an actual mechanical issue?

no one really know from what I have seen. Dealers are just replacing the diff assembly without giving a failure analysis.

I wonder if an independent differential shot could find it.

I feel like Toyota won't look as hard where if someone independent finds the issue it might be addressed better.

If it's irritating noise it's not as worrying since I can't hear shit anyways lol.

But if not everyone is experiencing it is obviously a quality control thing maybe sloppy machining. That only certain batches have the issues

Agreed. That's why I don't think it's a bearing issue. Likely the way differentials are being set up at a particular supplier.

So it's basically a hit and a miss. And it could easily be something that affects all build dates if the supplier is still used.

I know personally from work we order our material from whoever has it in stock but certain suppliers use different manufacturers of conduit. Sometimes we get batches of conduit from one specific supplier that when you bend it, it kinks and wrinkles. Sometimes it even splits in half right at the weld point. Some cheap chinese shit.

It could just be one specific supplier having screwed up batches. So maybe constantly having it fixed from factory you'll eventually get a different one from a different supplier and finally no more issue.

Dealing with suppliers is sometimes a truly shitty experience.

I've seen many of bad parts rejected to suppliers only to see them come right back to with the same discrepancies and sometimes even the same rejected part numbers for fuck sake!?

Vendors/Suppliers sit these bad parts on shelves then slip them back into the parts stream when there's a desperate need for parts.
People will do anything they can to save a dollar, and they know full well manufacturers need them as much as they need the manufacturers.

Its a double edge sword, Toyota needs to come down on these vendors like a ton of bricks if these diffs are having premature issues... but they risk cutting off their supply for production.

My howl decided to show up around 18k :( It's not super loud yet and only around 58mph but I'm in that speed area a lot so I hear it often. My wife thinks I'm crazy.
