Manual Tranny Gear Oil recommendations

    Bilstein 5100s, Borla 14945 S/S Exhaust, Fram Air Hog Filter, Diff Breather Mod & NGK Wires
    Goinging to change out all the manual trans & Differential gear oil on my 2001 Tacoma TRD 4X4 which has 112K on it and rear differential lock. The Service manual specifies the following grades & quantities

    Transmission: API GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 (2.6 Quarts)
    Transfer Case: API GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 (1.1 Quarts)
    Front Differential: Hypoid API GL-5 75W-90 (1.2 Quarts)
    Rear Differential: Hypoid API GL-5 80W-90 (3.2 Quarts)

    What do you guys recommend? Looks like I need 2 gallons so the synthetic route would be pretty expensive considering
    $30 Mobil 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    Mobil 75W-90 is about $10 quart.

    I used Mobil 1 for the rear end. Royal purple for the trans. I am RWD, so no transfer case.

    I would stick with good old conventional for the transmission. If you read around, you'll notice a lot of people having issues with 1-2 shifts after changing out the trans oil to synthetic.

    Personally, I changed the oil in mine about 2k back and went from the conv. toyota gear oil to Valvoline SynPower. It is a great oil, and has all the certifications you could ask for... API MT-1, API GL-5, MIL-PRF-2105E < Mil-Spec, SAE J2360, and Mack GO-J but still performs like shit in these transmissions. The 1-2 shift just feels terrible. On a cold morning, it will take a good two seconds to even drop into second gear, while many times getting a little grind to it.

    Bottom line is, if you change you oil out on any kind of a regular basis, there is absolutely no advantage to synthetic over conventional oil other than in the most extreme of conditions. Even there, you have a high probability of that transmission outliving the rest of your ride.

    I would stick with the OEM toyota oil. We all know it works well.

    Well I guess we share the same symptom of the 1-2 shift is notchy at best and just plain crappy most of the time. I was thinking synthetic might make that symptom go away.

    I had good luck with the synthetics making the shifts a little smoother.

    Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    Amsoil or Mobil 1. I used Amsoil in my 98 without issue. I have heard good things (no negative) about Mobil 1 also.

    I used Royal Purple and have the typical problems (1-2 shifts, notchy) but only when really cold and it goes away after truck warms up.
