Actually, you get the exact same truck for approximately $500 more.

Are you forgetting the power rear window slider? Whether that's worth $500 is an individual thing, but it is there on the 2017s...

If you read thoroughly you would see the Ridgeline, with street tires, climbed everything fine.

I think that's impressive. Canyon with street tires couldn't make the grade.

Christ, I hate to say it, but that thing looks good. I agree, if you don't offroad much, keep the thing.

That you know of yet, diff howl usually kicks in after 5k, did you verify your ujoints were greased, your transmission fluid was filled? Also will bet you $100 you don't have the plugs in your lower control arms, as confirmed by another 17 owner.

Most of what you listed are dealer issues not defects. If dealers aren't filling up tyranny fluid etc upon sale then that's on them lol. Hardly a reason so say the 3rd gen is a failure.

That being said this truck is alot different than my 07. But that's not a bad thing, just a different thing.

And yes the rear window on my truck is power like @gpb saud. That's worth $500 IMO.

Wrong on so many levels, tranny is prefilled from AISIN/manufacturer and should be PDI'd during assembly way before it hits dealer's lot, not sure if it's part of dealer PDI checklist but highly doubt it. Looking at your member number you are new here(nothing wrong with that just observation in regards to time spent here), and unaware of many more issues than just the transmission fluid level (control arm whistle, rear diff howl, ungreased zerks, under torqued u bolts, squeaky leaf packs, restarting entune units, etc.), and no one said failure, just issues. Actually none of what I said are dealer issues, and all part or assembly issues.

Which I thought was weird since the SR5 4WD DCLB went up 14% in price.

Oh yeah. I knew it wasn't a real lift kit. I just thought it actually looked good. I just think a stock Ridgeline is too low (like the Subaru Baja).

Not necessarily new to TW as I was here many years before back when I used to run with Socal TTORA

But I still don't understand your point. Are these defects or "issues"?

I would say both, does it matter, both are something that shouldn't be on a $35k truck. 129 members with confirmed rear differentials that howl, those that had theirs replaced, had the same howl return with Toyota rumored to working on a fix but not confirmed. The lower control arm whistle was fixed with a TSB using plugs, but oddly the 17s aren't coming with them as confirmed by a 17 owner here. The torqued u bolts, ungreased zerks those most don't care as they can be easily remedied by oneself, at dealer as well as the low transmission fluid, if the person bothered to have it checked manually, time will tell how many of the underfilled unaddressed ones have issues later down the road. My point is the 3rd gens have some issues, that would make any new car buyer think hard, I love mine, but I wont sit here and say its defect/issue free.

    ah ok gotchya.

Well I would say all new cars probably have their issue after rolling off the lot. I havent seen any of these, however I will keep any eye out.

The truck does so much more for me, these things are pretty minuscule IMO though. A new educated buyer can check these on purchase and drive home with a great truck.

    To the OP:

Your truck looks pretty sick for a Honda (sorry) If you do not or will not ever: off road, tow, haul, lift and look great doing it, just keep what you have. If not, despite the few flaws they may have, these trucks will never let you down. Maybe Im biased because my 07 had ZERO issues for almost 10 years, other than a recall for a passenger air bag issue.

As always, do you homework, walk in there educated as to what @usafwx is mentioning and you will be golden

A howling diff (indicative of gear intolerance or worn pinion/carrier bearing, etc.) is minuscule? underfilled transmissions? The other things yes not a big deal and can be easily fixed.

But agree overall, the Tacoma is still a top contender/great choice. I've had a 00,08,11,15 and now my 16, love my 16 the best minus the rear diff howl that makes me worried for long term reliability.

And you can look as hard as you want while test driving, etc. a lot of these issues wont creep up until miles later.

To me its minuscule. Nothing a good warranty wont fix :)

The howl thing is interesting though, do you have a link to a video or something demonstrating it? Would be nice to hear.

That's far from minuscule dude, I take it your not a mechanic. And it will matter when it shits out of warranty, or to the guys who lift their trucks and they shit and Toyota denys the claim.
