DOHC, HLA. I'd be inclined to think a valve spring is broken or follower is not riding on the cam

I was headed to a cracked spring or a stuck HLA.

Hopefully it will be rechecked before they start teardown and find that it was tech error.

You're right about using this new info as part of the arsenal, and I intend to do that.

Bit more to the story. The first check engine light work was done at a dealership in Boston when there were only 17 miles on the vehicle. I bought it with 319 miles on it at a dealership in RI. This is not smelling right to me.

Sounds like it was a dealer trade. The trading dealer knew the truck was a POS so they ended up using it as trade bait

Contact the local news stations. They may be able to help by putting pressure on those A-holes. They sold you a used and broken truck. . .

CoventryC, come oonnn down! You're the next contestant on "Who's Brand New Tacoma Busted Today!" lol Best of luck to you buddy. Personally I would already have made a bunch of people at the dealership truly miserable for selling me that truck.

Has nothing to do with the fact that it was a dealer trade. Tell me which dealer it was in boston, I probably know the swap manager. If anything the original dealer would have wanted to keep it and do the 30 hour job, they probably just assumed the cel was nothing and had service reset it, probably while the swap driver was sitting waiting to leave with the truck to RI.

You may well be right about a tech just turning off the CEL. No further info on the service record that indicates anything was done, just that the client said the CEL was on.

Rather than throw dealer names around on this board, please email me at carlnorcross50@gmail.com and I'll provide you the Boston dealer name as well as the one here in RI.

Update: I spoke to the customer relations manager yesterday. She's spoken to the service manager and the sales manager, and what the dealership is going to do is contact Toyota about making the dealership whole if and when they give me a new truck. I think this confirms that the problem with the engine is serious, and hopefully Toyota will take responsibility.

Keep us posted on any updates. Sounds like they need to replace it for you from what you've posted, hope Toyota and this dealer does right by you.

Take my advice, I work for a large auto group. Deal directly with the General manager who is usually more focused on the sales side of things and the service manager. Let the GM know your pretty unhappy and since the truck is so new and low Milage basically brand spanking new, you would like a replacement truck. If you are stern but fair more then likely if they are a reputable dealership, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't let you swap to another vehicle

Thanks for the insight and advice. If the customer service manager tells me that a new truck is a "no go" I will speak to the GM.

Service manager tells me that the problem with the engine is a faulty valve. Not sure at this point if that's a problem that rises to the level of a new truck, though.

Can't imagine it would get a new truck. Or even a new engine, unless the valve has dropped bits and damaged the piston and/or bore.

Rather than just a new valve and/or a valve job, you might ask for a new fully assembled head. Mostly to be sure they didn't miss anything.

Any word on their offers yet?

The dealership is replacing the cylinder head, and it will be the fully assembled head. It's supposed to be ready early this week, so the vehicle will have spent 2 weeks in the repair shop.

In the meanwhile, the dealership and Toyota have offered to pick up the first month's payment since I've been without for so long. And they're also offering at no cost to me their Platinum extended service plan which will cover it for an extra 7 years.

I pushed pretty hard for a new vehicle but didn't get anywhere with the dealership or Toyota.

Well aside from getting a new vehicle, sounds like you got taken care of. Still a bummer. Hopefully everything ends up ok for you.
